Written more from a tree-huggers perspective than an article filled with mechanical facts.

I heard that when your engine is cold, the pistons are somewhat not perfectly rounded yet. When you start drving under this condition, the pistons will slightly scrape your cylinder wall due to it's shape. When you "warm up" your car, the pistons will expand to it's normal size. I haven't done any research on this theory. Just sharing what I heard/read about in the past about the warming up issue.

Over here, cops can give you a ticket for leaving a car idling in front of your home. They are trying to crack down on thefts that way.

But, I suppose you will be okay if you lock your keys in the car.

I've been letting my cars heat up at idle for years. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I have a car with 200K on it as a beater and the thing runs great I let the car heat up to full operating temps when it -25' outside or -35 like last night. I went to the food store to get a bunch of stuff last night I left the car running the whole time I was in the store approx. 45min,.. why be I drove for 10 min and the car still hadn't even begun to heat up yet.

I have never seen any proof that letting your car idle is bad for your car. Sounds like an old wives tale to me.

I let my car warm up for 30 seconds before I slowly drive away. When it's -30 out I let my car warm up 1-2 minutes before slowly driving away.

No, nothing at all.

I love it when I see heartless people use terms like "tree hugger" to refer to other people that happen to be passionate about something in life instead of taking everything around them for granted. They unconsciously enjoy the same environment that the one's they are insulting work so hard to keep that way that in essence they turn out to be a walking oxymoron. Yet another label for the scared and uninformed that we are pre-conditioned to use by the establishment media to keep people on seperate sides.
