Default Switching to synthetic

I want to change to Mobil 1 when I drain the original oil. I'm currently at 5000 miles and leaving on a cross country trip in two weeks. I want to change oil before leaving. Other than giving a good long time for oil to dran and switching filters is there anything else I need to do ? Thanks

Steve

do NOT change to synthetic if you only have 5000 miles on the engine.

the FRM cylinder walls in the S2000 need at least 7500-10,000 miles to break in properly with regular oil. I don't know what it is exactly that's different about synthetic, but it has something to do with the way it coats or works with the FRM cylinder walls during breakin. (there was a TSB on this from a previous generation prelude that had FRM walls)

So wait before going to synthetic.

I know its recommanded to wait 9-10k miles before going full syn but would it be ok to switch to synthetic after like 60k miles? It would be for my beater 1994 honda accord with 62k miles on it.

yeah. you can switch to or from synthetic oil any time you want (assuming it's after 10k miles on your S2000).

Doesn't synthetic on a beater defeat the purpose of, a beater?

Well, considering you can go thousands and thousands miles further on synthetic, could it not be argued that its the most cost effective method, especially for the frugally minded beater driver....

That would be true if there was proof that switching to synthetic gave you a quantifiable increase in engine life that was determined to be of greater value than the price delta for switching to synthetic.

That doesn't seem likely to me for a low-compression Accord...

With a good synthetic you can go 15 thousand miles between changes. Would anybody dare run conventional that long? I would not run past 5k miles myself on dino oil.

So, assuming that dino oils indeed become too dirty to run safely past 5k miles....

$5 a quart synthetic, $5 filter, or $30 every 15000 miles

$2.50/ quart mineral, $5 filter, or $52.50 every 15000 miles

Thats $150 bucks over a 100,000 mile period.

So what does this prove? I am a cheap-ass, and a lazy- ass too as other than the savings I would rather go a year between oil changes rather than 3 times a year.

Of course, in the S, its a different story.

Well, you can get Valvoline at Kragen for $1/qt... That's cheaper even if you don't go the 7500k recommended by Honda...
