Tailgating
The only thing that ticks me off worse than a tailgater is a jerk off who stays in the left lane MAINTAINING the same speed as traffic in the right lanes - with moderate traffic levels.
In either instance it's best to use common sense and patience. Road rage is just too common these days; conversly, respect for human life is not!
Ironically, just before I logged on to the forum I read the following news report:

Drive safely and may the S be with you.

escargo, interesting you mention people in the left lane maintaining the speed of the right lane. Do you feel that in that situation the person should speed up (violating the speed laws even more) to convenience you? I, personally, won't drive more than 9mph above the speed limit. Often I'll move into the left lane to pass someone, then they'll speed up to my speed. I *WON'T* risk a speeding ticket (above 10mph beyond the speed limit) simply to convenience someone, and I won't slow down with a tailgater on my behind (for safety reasons). Catch-22.
By your definition I'm worse than a tailgater, because I (1) won't excessively speed and (2) wanted to pass someone going slower than me, then they sped up.
If they speed up faster than me I'll let them pass and pull in behind them. I only get into this situation when the guy I'm passing speeds up to my speed, or I'm passing a mass of cars and *can't* merge right.
Expecting someone to flagrantly break the law (by speeding excessively to get around someone on the right) so that you can flagrantly break the law (by speeding excessively) is not fair and totally unreasonable.

what bothers me most is those who pull right up to my rear at stop lights... nothing you can do there- except hope that they dont roll into you!
i try to leave space in front of me and then slowly roll forward, but some just follow.

It has made driving a little better, but still there are those who are oblivious to what is going on around them.

A lot of the suggestions I've read may end up pissing off the tailgater. The worst one was to slow down and when the guy tries to pass you, speed up.

it's also fun to slow down enough to make them pass (if possible); when they do pass, hammer it and teach them a little something about speed. (unless it's a Z06!
) and it's even more fun when they try to keep up with you

I suppose the only peace of mind comes from the fact that if he/she hits you, by law it's all his/her fault.

c'mon Dario...
seriously, which is worse?
Sorry, escargo, guess I'm a little sensitive to anything that sounds like it's justifying tailgating, please accept my apology.
I misinterpreted your dislike for people in the left lane doing what you described as a blanket statement for all people in that situation. Since I've found myself in that situation before (while trying to pass someone), I made the connection between your dislike and me.
I, too, dislike people who just stay in the left lane for miles and miles with nobody in the right lane for a considerable distance. This forces me to either wait for them to speed up or decide to move over, or pass them on the right.
I'll have to remember that law next time I'm in Pennsylvania. I'd love to see the history on that law

I travel 11 miles on Route 10 from Randolph to Parsippany in northern New Jersey to get to work each day. Route 10 is your typical suburban 2/3 lane road with strip shopping centers and etc. It usually takes me between 20 to 50 minutes to make the trip. People always tailgate and always come too close when waiting for a light. I often close my eyes while waiting at a light (as I've said in a previous post) and wonder how hard the ass behind me will hit and how much damage I will have. I agree with wanabe in that I too hate when the car behind you gets right on your bumper.
Tonight's drive home was in the wet snow. It wasn't sticking but the road was sloppy, not especially slippery, but sloppy. Speeds did exceed 30 mph. I had my 4Runner, the S was home in the garage because of the weather reports. You'd think that in this condition people would know better and drive with more courtesy. No, that was not the case. The tailgaters were out as usual. There were two accidents as a results of this. Both because the tailgaters couldn't stop. Not only were two innocent cars damaged (I don't think that there were any injuries) but traffic crawled all the way. My 45 minute ride took 1.5 hours. All because of tailgating.
