So after reading a bunch of specs I've noticed that alot of people are running test pipes. I was curious, do any of you run them all the time? Only switch them out when it's time to get your car inspected? What are the pros (obviously horsepower, any other?) and what are the cons (anyone get exhaust smoke)?
Just curious as I realize that you aren't suppose to run a test pipe on the street, not that any of us would.
Also how easy is it to switch out if you need to pass inspection? If you don't have a lift?
Doesn't anyone remember what the air was like in major cities like Los Angeles, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago or New York during the 60's, 70, and even into the early 80's? Hasn't anyone seen what the mountain tops look like in the Appalachians, the Smokies, and in eastern Canada?

Don't do it.!!!

Hmm... Anyone seen the Top Gear episode where they talk about the co2 pollution caused by SUV's compared to a cow? I forget the exact stats but it's something like 1 cow does more pollution in a day then a SUV in an entire month.
So lets all eat chicken and drive with test pipes, save the world, and have more fun

I wasn't born yet.
The funny thing is that people can run test pipes in the Smokies and people in California can't. Of course this is still a better thing for the environment as there are way more people in the major cities.
Oh AssassinJN (a fitting name for this upcomming comment), and what do we do with cows? We kill them. Conversely, I suggest we also kill and eat SUV's.

The air was just as polluted in the 60's, if not more so than it is right now in every one of those big cities.

Not legally they can't. The requirement for a cat is a federal requirement. It's just that different jurisdictions have differences in how or whether they check for it and the penalties can be different. AFAIK, cats are required in all 50 states and in all Canadian provinces.
That's why the products are sold as "test pipes". They are marketed as a pipe that can be inserted temporarily in place of the cat to "test" the cat to see if it is clogged. They are, of course, not meant for long term use on public roadways.
