The minimal (to non-existant) performance gains (from what Ive heard) dont make up for the guilt I feel for doing my part to ruin the environment. If everyone took the attitude that everyone else can take care of it no one would take care of it. Just keep in mind that this plant could shrug us off like a weak case of the flu

Not legally they can't. The requirement for a cat is a federal requirement. It's just that different jurisdictions have differences in how or whether they check for it and the penalties can be different. AFAIK, cats are required in all 50 states and in all Canadian provinces.

That's why the products are sold as "test pipes". They are marketed as a pipe that can be inserted temporarily in place of the cat to "test" the cat to see if it is clogged. They are, of course, not meant for long term use on public roadways.
Yeah you're right, I should have been clearer.

Here in Southern California I think its a $2500 fine for having a test pipe but I don't know if that's the federal law being enforced or state law, or both. But they do crack down on that here.

That's enough of a reason for me not to get one. Not to mention the reason for the law.

So gains are minimal? Anyone have some numbers on this? In my past experience ('91 legacy sport, awd turbo; '89 944 NA; '97 Prelude SH) Running with a cat-eliminator makes a pretty significant improvement on a dynojet. I have seen as much as 19-hp gain, with friends who have seen better.

However I do realize just how much thought and preperation went into the S2000 and can believe that the cat is probably a pretty high-flowing unit resulting in less of an increase.

p.s. Top Gear's solution to the cow vs car problem was to get rid of all cars, and to have Top Steer instead.

Doesn't anyone remember what the air was like in major cities like Los Angeles, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago or New York during the 60's, 70, and even into the early 80's? Hasn't anyone seen what the mountain tops look like in the Appalachians, the Smokies, and in eastern Canada?
Lol I'm sorry, but that picture reminds me of the dave chappelle joke from "For What It's Worth" when he's talkin about the Indian Guy in the Wal-Mart, and when he throws a wrapper on the ground, "a single tear came out". hahahaha

I just ordered a invidia test pipe, and am going to buy the catback somtime in the very near future.

Everything has to come to a end, the world is always changing, we can spend the rest of our lives not using test pipes and missing out, just to have a commet hit us at age 50 and wipe everyone out, i say take life for what it is, enjoy everything, and when its all over, it doesnt really matter, your worm food either way? Im gonna enjoy every second of my test pipe.

The oil burned by the iraqi retreating soldiers in the gulf war put out more polution than 1000 s2000s with test pipes running for 10 years. This is being light on the estimate.

So assuming I end up getting one, a few questions.

How long does it take to switch back to stock to pass inspection?
Does it throw a CEL?
What kind of gain are expected with stock cat-back?
Any negatives other than pollution?
How much louder is it?

Thanks!

1.) Dont switch back to stock for inspection, just go (if you are me) to the poor ass side of town, and pay a mexican 20 bucks to not check for emissions.
2.) It will throw a CEL, you need to make a 02sensor tricker, if your test pipe doesnt come with one. i know mine doesnt, the invidia test pipe.
3.) I assume almost no gain with stock, being the exhaust stock narrows back down, and its pointless for the test pipe? Thats why im ordering the catback next
4.) I cant think of any besides pollution, except being afraid that green hippies will attack you.
5.) It will be louder, a nice loud. From experiance, friend put a test pipe on her acura tl, and it sounded like a g35 coupe afterwards.

i run an Invidia TP.

1. Jack up the car, take out 6 bolts, swap it w/ the CAT, tighten it.. done. 20 Mins

2. I have never thrown a cel, and it CAME with the o2 Sensor fix.

3. It feels more responsive when i get on it.

4. You WILL smell it when its on the car, but it smells "racey" IMO. hah

5. A litle bit louder, give a small "throaty" sound

Why not enjoy killing people? Why not enjoy punching people in the face?

Just because there was tons of oil burned in Iraq doesn't make it OK for me to do it.

"Oh look genocide cool! Eh, it won't matter if I kill this one person, there's already thousands dead!" Enjoy life!!!

You can't be serious.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Test pipes =/= Human lives. Yes I get it. But the last comment is oblivious to logic and your hedonistic comments are "shallow and pedantic". [Peter] "Yes, I agree, shallow and pedantic." [/Peter]

I could care less if you run a test pipe. But to try to justify it doesn't really fly.
