Testpipe
All:
Texas is a state with emissions testing, and the law described above on sale of vehicles. So all you Texans need to have your cats back on for your annual emissions check, and when you sell your car. In the meantime, I have driven in TX a lot, and have never been pulled over by any cop who wanted to check my cat ---- even when I WAS pulled over for speeding.
I certainly don't hate true "tree huggers" as I am a degreed horticulturist, so I guess I'm one of them. It's a problem of nobody really knowing which environmental standards to apply. In CA, I could get pulled over and cited by a cop for running a 2 liter engine without a cat, but the guy in the 6 liter Hummer skates on by. In some European countries, they wouldn't consider the emissions from a 2 liter s2k without a cat to be so bad, but would tax the hell out of the Hummer owner for C02 pollution. But in the US I can spew all the C02 I want without penalty, because Congress has not declared C02 to be a pollutant. We can't get many economical diesel "city cars" they have in Europe because they don't pass the US standards, but do pass European standards, which some scientists say are actually stricter.
What I'm saying is that what is a pollutant and what is not has become more a game of political football than science.
Thanks,
Richard

I really am not concerned that a cop would know anything, just as if I were to drive a Porsche 959 on US streets. Guess what cops, that car is illegal. Who wants to drive one?! Meeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Anyway, the beat cops don't have a clue.
So I guess the point is I would have to reinstall my cat to pass emissions. Is it worth it?

I don't want to sound like a 'tree-hugger' here but all you test pipe people do realize that you are increasing the amount of harmful emissions by something like 40 to 50 times greater than they are with a cat (CO2 notwithstanding)? That your car's output now equals the pollutant levels of about 100 honda insights? One of the reasons I originally purchased my first S2000 was that it was the ONLY LEV sports car available at the time.

One older school bus or heavy truck pumps out more emissions into the air while idling at the red light than I do without a cat during the whole week.
