I'm not sure I buy into the whole 'wheel lock' thing... years ago, I knew of some bad-people... for wheel locks, they would use a socket JUST big enough to 'pound' onto the wheel lock, then wratchet and a breaker bar...

(Fortionately those people are in jail now)

Yea- but it takes a lot of pounding to get a socket over the round wheel locks and I know I would hear such pounding even in my sleep- especially as it applies to 4 wheels unless they used some kind of rubberized mallet to reduce the noise.

Wheel locks are only a deterrant. But if you own really really expensive wheels and have no choice but parking outside of a garage, then I suggest you invest in wheel locks for each nut (rather than 1 per wheel) and perhaps investigate the options because I'm sure someone has made wheel locks which are resistant to oversized sockets by now- perhaps with breakaway rings on the outside or a bearing based cap that turns freely when a socket is pounded over it. But imagine how many oversized sockets they would need to remove 4 wheels with locking lug nuts on each lug.

If you decide to put locks on, put at least two sets. I have heard of thiefs taking four lugs off, then pushing sideways on the car till the stud with the lock breaks. You can push all day and not break two lugs. With two locks, you can drive all day and not break the lugs as well.

Feel sorry for you buddy, time to get your insurance policy to work. No doubt, get a decent set of lock nuts the next time round. Somehow I feel lucky that you didn't own a set of SW388s, otherwise the feeling will be so much more stronger and you would probably end up hunting them down and executing them.

Hopefully since the wheels were stock, there won't be any hassle getting insurance to replace them.

That sucks, I am sorry to hear about your wheels and then the cops not taking finger prints.
