Just FYI: Almost all of the wear on the top caused by bar contact with the top occurs WHILE the top is already folded down (not during the folding) by vibration induced friction between the two contacting surfaces.

I just use high temp silicone adhesive to attach black canvas fabric patches to spots that are showing wear so the patch takes the friction wear and not the top!

Some S2k specific stuff to check/do

Change all fluids and filters unless you have no doubt on their condition
Check tire tread depth on the inside and outside of all tires
Check the oil often until, some car burn more than others
Check for spring Spacers
Verify spark plug torque is correct
(AP1) Pull valve cover and inspect retainers/keepers
(AP1) Verify that your engine serial number is above 1025386 so you don't need new oil banjo bolts
Gravity bleed the brakes
Change the belt
PCV or Supra PCV mod
Axle nut retorque
De-burr the soft top frame
Check soft top straps
Shin-etzu top seals
Ragtopp top or 303 on the soft top
Clean/protect cv joint boots
Bypass clutch interlock

Ah, interesting Jlude, I thought it was the folding down as well that caused the damage.. So, it's mainly when the top is already folded down? hmm..

Unfortunately search is down, but I came across another recommendation:

I guess I'll goto Joann fabrics and apply a patch to the wear spots on the top. Hopefully this will prevent future rips/holes, at least from the contact points.

Something that is often neglected, but definitely should be checked/replaced is your clutch fluid (it's just brake fluid in the clutch fluid reservoir).

I had my top replaced under warranty. While waiting for the top to come in I applied a patch to the inside of the top. I can not remeber what glue/adhesive I used but it caused some noticable wrinkling (seen from the outside). So I used lizard skin chain stays to protect the new top. They worked like a charm!! Quick, easy, cheap, replaceable and do not alter anything (like adding adhesive to the top)

Ahh, that's something I definitely want to avoid winter.. Don't want a patch applied on the inside to be visible from the outside because of the adhesive/glue. I'll have to poke around on s2ki more and see what people have done when search gets back up and running.

Those lizard chainstays you mentioned are meant for bicycles? Are they flexible so the top can still fold w/o problem and they stay on/last? Their site seems to have little/no info on them in terms of their size/etc..

I found that silicone works well because it's flexible and can be peeled back off with no noticeable marks left on the top. So if the patch starts working loose after 6 months or so I just peel it off and reapply a fresh patch. No wear holes on my 8 year old top and I use it almost every time I drive!
