Default "Ticking" sound from driver side softtop..

Is this the infamous softtop rattle?

The sound is only coming from the rear of the driver side somewhere in the softtop mechanism and is very faint. It has a distinct "ticking" sound, almost like when you slightly flick your finger on a piece of paper.

I ask because I haven't even put on 600 miles on the S yet, and this was the first night I heard it. At first I thought it was coming from the stereo, but when I turned it down the "ticking" sound was still present.

I'm fully aware the solution is shin-shitsu (sp?) grease, but I just wanted to be 100% sure before I purchase it from handa-accessories.com.

Thanks guys!

I have the exact same problem! I have somewhat reduced the problem by greasing the hinges. I used silicone spray so it could work itself in to the hinges. I also did not want the smell of grease in the new car. However I am not convinced that this is the whole problem. I have noticed that the problem is non existent when the top has had a chance to soften up in the sun. My car is also a 2006 with 600 plus miles on it. To all that read this post...help us!

You guys bought a car that is very hard riding, bouncing down the road at every imperfection of the pavement. The top is a complicated hinged affair with all sorts of pivot points, one type of material rubbing up against another, with latch mechanisms, rivets, velcro. It is not surprising that there will be ticking, squeaking, thumping or some sort or another.
and is very faint
I'm sorry, but you guys are beyond help. When you have a real problem, you will know it. Wait till you drive it a few more thousand miles and begin to hear ticking from under the car, rattling from inside the dash, ringing from inside the engine bay and noises and sounds that you have never heard before in any other car. This car is going to drive you crazy. You're not driving a Lexus or a Caddy or even a Camry or Accord.

I agree with xviper as noted above - there are many new sounds and vibrations to come on the journey of S2000 ownereship...some take a little acceptance and getting used to.

However...

The soft top click is containable and can be eliminated for the most part...

there are several round hinge pieces just above the shoulder on both passenger and driver side of the top (when closed) - by opening the top half way and placing one side (the soft side) of a velcro strip ion the part of the round hinge that makes contact with another rib of the top the clicking sound has been eliminated for several owners... there is a write up on this with photos ... I don;'t have a link tothewrite up but do have it saved as a pdf file that I would be glad to email if you guys PM me with your e addy's...

Other members have found some of the top clicking while closed coming from the latches & strikers ... Ihave found it comes from the mechanism and been successful in eliminating it...

good luck ... let us know...

welcome aboard.

Make sure the latches click back in before you drop the top. If not you'll get a rattle/click from them while going over bumps.

Learn to ignore these faint noises and enjoy the car. Good luck.

This is SUCH a common complaint by every owner. I find it pretty crazy that so many posts have been made over this, with replys to them... They've even had pics with self-fixes for it... But they always get deleted.

Why not make a decent STICKY for this one?

Yep... so I guess I'm not the only one experiencing this... lol. Mine is fairly new too and the rattle is somewhat annoying... I'm getting used to it. IMO... no matter what car you buy... it will rattle more and more after putting many miles on it. I think there's no escape from the annoying little noises that tend to be born with the aging of the car.

Man ... I just started having that issue last night!

I must say, this ticking sound is really annoying. I can stand other rattling noises (leather rubbing, wire harnesses rubbing under the dash, etc. etc. ... or even my 2 bottles of Poland Spring water that roll around in my trunk), but I just get extremely irritated by the ticking sound for some odd reason -- probably because the ticking sound is much more frequent, louder, and higher pitch than any other rattle.

On a side note, the increase in number of "repetitive" or beaten to death posts is most likely due to the search engine dying.
