Default Tips on how to lower my car insurance.

im 18, and about to get a s2000 very soon, but the only thing that makes me weary is the car insurance prices. You see, im 18, and basically fall under most of the insruance's high risk category.

what are a few things i can do to lower the price? i have a friend who told me to put the car under my dads name and me just as a secondary driver? dont know, but does that work? will it help tremendously?

any similar tactics you guys can share with me?

i filled out an online quote from progressive and im like $370/mo... no thanks, will love to see that number ALOT lower.

thanks in advance.

Iono, but Imma payin' $74/month.

Actually, I've heard something like that aswell...about going under your parents insurance. If i remember correctly, you are only allowed to get into two accidents if you reside in the same house or something like that....

Drop your fuel cutoff to 4500RPM.

anyway,

get our your local yellowpages and call around to a bunch of local agents. they will give you the best advice. don't be afraid of the independent agents; they will probably save you alot more money than the allstate/state farm/farmers agents.

I've heard that listing the S2000 as a secondary/weekend/fun car instead of the DD will bring the cost of insurance down. Can anyone confirm?

Put under your dad's name should help. Just make sure you are legally covered by insurance -- please don't do anything illegal.

Then drive safely for 2 years, your insurance premium will come down very quickly. Don't do something stupid on roads (i.e. race), keep it reasonablle close to speed limits, no drink and driving ... basically you need a clea record.

Since my joke didn't seem to go over well, here are some common ways to lower your total insurance cost.

- Don't get speeding, careless/recklass driving, defective vehicle tickets (hence the redline joke..)
- combine insurance on multiple vehicles (like your parents' vehicles)
- combine vehicle insurance with existing homeowner's/renter's, life, health insurance
- good student discounts
- some companies offer discounts for taking defensive driving courses

List your car as a "fun" car. They'll ask what the primary use of the vehicle is, and tell them it's for pleasure. Also state that you only drive 5k miles a year. That should lower the insurance significantly.

Pending that you actually drive less than 5k a year. The discount is only about a 10% reduction on collision coverage only.

Yes this is true! but I'm not sure if you have to add another vehicle.

We put our 91 Corolla on our insurance as our commuter. It changed the Benz to a leisure vehicle. Saved about 20 - 30 bucks a month.
