I think the OP has a good handle on things.

They make snow tires for a reason. You get better traction in the snow using them vs all-seasons or summer tires.

No way to argue that point.

I live where we get some snow, and I may have to drive in it on occasion. I run all-season tires in the fall to spring months. If it snows heavy, we take the suv with awd.

If you are driving with summer tires in the snow.....no matter how "carefull" or skilled a person is.....you will not have the traction you would with snow tires.

What anyone chooses to do is up to them.

Be careful then. Your summer tires lose a lot of their grip when it gets cold. Next time it's that cold, go to an empty parking lot and test the limits. You might be suprised how low they are.

I just got snow tires and while they are WAY better than bald re070's...I was suprised how bad they sucked with only a few inches on the ground. I could barely make it up the slightest inclines. I almost rolled slid down. But they are better than summer tires obviously. On dry road they seem way less stable and noisy, but I assume thats normal?

BTW I was forced to drive in the snow once with summer tires. I do not advise ANYONE to ever do that. Its amazing how terrible they are. Thank God, nothing happened to me...but take my word for it and don't experiment that for yourself. No matter how careful you are...its like ice skating

Well that depends on which ones you got. Tell me what tires you bought, the sizes, and speed ratings, and I bet I can tell yo why they sucked.

i attended Wyotech in PA where i grew up. so many classmates came from florida where they killed their cars the first week of snow covered ice, especialy the drifters. i suggest anyone who wants a good show, be on mainstreet, Blairsville PA, at 4:00 for the "Tech-er 200" when 1000 hotrod drivin students leave morning classes at the same time 1000 tunner drivin students race to afternoon class......oh and Blizzak WS knobbies all the way.
