ap2 is faster
That may be, but the way my logic works is that the money I save buying an AP1 over an AP2 can go into making the AP1 faster! I'll save nearly $4000 or so going AP1.
dump 4k into an AP1 in 'power' mods that arent FI, still wont make more power than a AP2.

for reference i track an AP1 with ITBs, exhaust, header, full stand alone. on straights my friends with AP2s pull on me everytime.

watch it here at 1:20 minute mark

Did you ever consider the effect that drag has on his car? And even with your modifications, the only way to ensure you're making more power is to get a dyno done.

IMO: AP2's are better cars, the AP1's are better S2000s.

I've dynoed 215whp, my ap2 friends all dyno 230+

yes he could have drafted some but they'll pull even on the not-so-long straights

Funny how different people feel about certain aspects of this car. In particular note to the engine. I would never go back to an F20 after experiencing what an F22 does, especially with a 8lb flywheel and lowered vtec/tune. Its just a more practical power producing engine that takes less work to go fast around a track or on the street for that matter. It also doesn't burn oil or have any of the weak links the F20 had. The added rev band loses any luster once you mate an ap1 ecu to it. I also think the ap1 trans gear spread works better overall with the broader trq band on a tuned F22 has. Chassis wise it almost doesn't matter once you start modifying the spring rates and chassis tuning. Though the rear control arm geometry was refined in the ap2 for less toe influence under suspension stroke. A bump steer toe correction kit solves that easy enough on an ap1 though. I think the early ap1's are probably going to be the best option because they are the lightest and the cheapest. But the engines leave some to be desired. I have an 01 powered with an F22, but it took years of ownership to finally arrive with the best melding combo. It doesn't make sense to do right off the bat, unless you get lucky and get an ap1 with an f22 in it already from someone else's project or previous mishap.
In all fairness the OP asked about AP1 vs AP2, he didn't ask AP1 vs AP2 vs frankenbuild

Truth is if my engine takes a dump, a 2.2 setup as you have yours will certainly be on the short list, but you basically have a 2.0 with more displacement, so what is not to love
Exactly, whats is not to love. Actually I think he was inferring to the best version of the S2000. Its not my fault Honda missed the mark on the right combination, when.

But thats one of the benefits of having a car and a large forum knowledge base that is 16 years old to draw from. You get to learn a few things and reap the rewards I never had luxury of 12 years ago when I got mine.

This actually is a one sentence explanation that sums this debate up perfectly

Hmmmm, you guys are making me rethink this... I really wasn't planning to go with motor mods on an AP1, I would probably go coil-overs and a roll cage. Having owned an AP2, I really did love the car. Maybe I need to go find an AP1 to drive...

AP1 AP2 will both make great platforms to track. Do what makes sense for your goals.
