It wasn't shot (in terms of wear), but it was sticking, and you could see on the disk where it had been skipping (small "cuts" all over it)

heffergm, I've seen this problem with another owners car. Root cause was that the spline on the shaft that the clutch rides on was not lubricated properly from the factory and was starting to rust a bit. Unfortunately the owner was past his warranty period and Honda would not honor the claim.

The clutch plate itself was still in new condition (even with 40k miles) but he experienced the same symptoms that you described.

Sound like could be the pressure plate, change the complete clutch, and problem solve.

What did the clutch cost and did the dealer cover any of it? I see that there is now a TSB on this issue.
