I did the same thing with mine. Rubbing alcohol works great. It will take a little time but it's worth it.

yes and no... as I understand it, it controls the amount of power the amp supplies, it doesn't change the frequency of the signal or anything (?)... turning it makes the woofers louder or quieter yes

I did this cheap little "mod" last year and i have no regrets whatsoever. It gives a nice bling to the interior. Rubbing alcohol does the trick.

I thought I read a thread that said the 00-01 are shiny underneath and the 02-03 are black. Can't find the thread anymore, but just know it might be black underneath for you.
