Default True or False: Honda Salesman = Unknowledgeable

I give a big fat True to this question.

Seriously, it's embarrasing shopping for an S2K because all the salesman look at the car, look at me, and give me a thumbs up.

In my mind, I say "Sell me the damn car! Explain to me why it doesn't even compare to an MR2 Roadster, Z3, Miata, or even a Boxster!!!"

They just say "Very strong. Many horsepower. Fast."

Check out how annoyingly dumb he is in this little self test I gave the salesman.

A) One dealer assured me that it has 200 HP, and not 240.

B) I kinda tricked him by asking "It's 5-speed, right?" and he nodded and said "Of course".

C) I asked "Does it come in automatic?"...and he had to ask his manager. (obviously I know it doesn't)

*Putting face in my palms in dismay*

How sad.

Funny- I just posted this responce to another thread.

Whenever I speak to a HONDA salesperson about the S2000, I realize they know less about the car than I do; thanks to this great forum you can't help but be informed! Based upon that insight/truth if a salesperson was to say the 2002 or 2003 was the last year the car was going to be made I would just discount it an yet another salesperson who really ought to know more about what it is that they are trying to sell.
With the amount of money HONDA is making on the car, I don't think it will be discontinued anytime soon. I suspect it will go through a redesign but discontinued I have a hard time believing. IMHO.

Are you asking about your salesman (singular)? If so, then the answer is obvious.

If you're asking about Honda salespeople in general, then the answer is not so clear. I've had the privilege of dealing with some really outstanding human beings while buying three of the four Hondas I've owned.

As a buyer, you have the right to choose your salesperson. Speak to the sales manager or customer service manager at the dealership and tell him/her what sort of salesperson you're willing to deal with. If said manager can't help you, walk away. You're in charge.

Unfortunately, I think the majority of automobile salespeople are floaters; they tend to move around a lot, which leads to them not having such a good working knowledge of their product. I know there are exceptions, but I've found this to be true as a general rule.

.. I have made a profession out of test driving S2000's until my' 02 arrives (was going to be silver/red until I saw the new interior, now the wait starts again). It amazes me that when you walk into a dealership and tell them that you are interested in the most expensive car Honda produces, they provide you with a salesman who has been there a week. That has happened to me three times in Atlanta. Of course when they are young, hungry and stupid you get to take hour and a half test drives
But I agree with Triple-H, when you study this Forum you know so much more than even an experienced salesman who has to have an overall knowledge of several different cars. Most of us wouldn't even have clue how many seats are in an Odyssey? Or the MSRP of an Accord. But, ask us about OUR car, and we're walking encyclopedias. The gentleman that I have been working with, who I feel is professional, has great follow through and is a real nice guy, calls me regularly to ask me questions about the car. Yesterday he wanted to know if the '02 was 265HP? We Wish.

BTW, if anyone sees a Silver/black at MSRP in the southeast , please post, next one here is December. Thanx

I wouldn't expect a salesman to know the diameter of the brake rotors but I do expect them to know why their product is better than the competition.

Why is the Odyssey better than the rest?
Why is the Accord better than the Camry?
Why is the S2000 better than the Z3 or Boxster?

They should pick up a magazine once in a while.

In general, they are mostly unknowledgeable about the specifics of the cars they sell. You'll find this to be less true the further you get away from major cities, as they tend to not move around as much and have more years at the dealership.

I've always been surprised that I can walk circles around any salesman at the Honda or Toyota dealer, but I take pride in what I know and I like to learn as much as I can. Most car salesman take no pride in their job, which is very evident when they move around a lot and don't stay loyal to their employer, they just want a paycheck.

Yes but you would think they at least know that the hole car is not aluminum, only the hood. And most have no idea about the second compartment. I've had one dealer not even know how to put it in reverse. The bad thing it was my car while I was buying it.

I've had mixed results dealing with sales people. First off, I bought my used 2sk from a Toyota dealer. Needless to say, they didn't have a clue about the car. A couple of sales guys from the nearest Honda dealer in Denver seemed very knowledgeable though. I showed up the day after I bought it and they taught me a lot about the mods I had on it, how to test them out and even gave me some suggestions on quick easy replacements. Then I showed up here in Enid, and once again, they look at my car like the its an alien artifact. I'm not the expert on my car YET, so I'd appreciate being able to go to the dealer and get some answers.

In the mean time, this place rocks. It's like a free education.
