For those interested i took my car in Monday for the 1-2 shift problem and the clutch rattle.

The car was supposed to be finished the next day but they saw that the pressure plate was "scorched" so they ordered a new one along with a new release bearing.

Anyways, my clutch, believe it or not, was almost finished, i have 13222 kms on the machine, thats nothing!!! . You can see this in the pictures.

They also, resurfaced the flywheel.

I spoke to the mechanic and he did some demonstrations of the s2ks syncro system... I know him from my previous Hondas, he is a nice guy...

The point that he stressed most is to let the transmission warm up before any stress gets put on it...

I thought the clutch disc was fairly small in diameter although the pressure plate is fairly beefy.

Anyways, enough bla bla, here are the pics.

New clutch:

Flywheel:

Old clutch, you can see it is very worn at only 13k kms!!:

Pressure plate:

Well, i can't wait to get it back, although i cannot really drive it in this damn winter

And BTW, my drag racing days are over, i proved what i wanted to, the s2k is capable of high 13s fairly easilly with the right driver (I hit 13s over 10 times at the dragstrip). I am not going to put that kind of stress on the car again.

I will probably start drag racing again with my next car, whatever it will be, (Anyone wants help me buy a 911 TT?)

My new passion is Solo 2, i have yet alot to learn and get my A$S whipped by competitors. AHHHHHHHH reminds me of my early days drag racing. Competition is fun.

Hey Sev, great pics.... I have a question.

When that guy says warm up the tranny before putting any "stress" on it, does this mean warm it up before going into VTEC or warm it up before pushing the throttle beyond 1/2?

When I'm going to work in the morning, I use no more than half throttle until the temp gauge shows 3 bars, but I will venture into VTEC... what do you think? Furthermore, do you know if 3 bars on the temp gauge necessarily means the tranny is warmed up? Thanks!

Sev:

Great pics and info! Let us know what you think of the new clutch. I'm thinking of having it done and I have 10k miles on my MY 2000 S2K.

Take care,
Andrew

I will.

Another thing i forgot to mention.

My knowlegde of clutches is fairly limited but here is an observation i made.

When i shook the old clutch, the springs were rattling and shaking around making noise. The new one however felt as tight as can be.

Can this be the cause of the noise getting louder with time?

The mechanic said it is normal for the springs to loosen up and move, so maybe as the TSB described the vibration from the gears was shaking these springs which get looser with time and since we sit so close to the tranny and have little sound deadening material we hear it all.

Anyone care to comment on this?

Thank you.

How many drop starts on that clutch?

Those have got to be a little hard on the clutch.

My clutch had the same problem. Failed at 8400 miles, wouldn't grip anymore. Its a problem of weak materials. The old stock clutch just plain sucked. It wouldn't grip going uphill, and when it would grip, it would bog the engine and almost stall and the car would still be rolling backwards from a stop. The new clutch fixes all of that. The old clutch was unbelievably easy to smoke.

When I had it looked at for a 5th gear synchro grind, I had them replace my clutch. They said it was abuse and there was no TSB on it yet. I printed out copies from S2000online.com and brought them to the dealer and was like "ok there is a problem with this being a weak clutch, its a known issue, here's copy's of several other people with the same problem." The dealer spoke to a honda tech and had the clutch replaced as a goodwill gesture.
