Turbo and Emissions
This topic might have been beaten to death but I didn't come up with any answers on the search anyways I was just wondering what they do when testing emissions, If you have a turbo and turn the boost to zero will the S2000 still fail the emissions test. Cuz the only thing holding me back from the turbo is the CARB approval and the warranty.
I talked to dwight (the mechanic) briefly on this, and it has more to do with the beauracracy and expense and delay involved in getting the emissions tested. I believe that you actually have to provide a kit that they place on their car, and then get back to you. I think dwight believes that with the cat on, it should pass CARB emissions tests, but don't quote me on it. I'll see if I can find out more info on it.

I could be wrong here but I don't think turning boost to zero will matter. If your car is idling, then you're not in positive boost anyway. As for warranty, if you're really worried about it, stay away from mods. Mods and warranty just don't mix well. I don't think you'll find a CARB approved turbo, at least not for the S2000. In addition to which, a factory turbo (like an Eagle Talon) is not a good reference. If it came like that from the factory then it has to pass emissions, not the case with a NA vehicle that has been turbocharged after the fact. If it's tested on rollers, then you will probably see positive boost. If it's not on rollers then you won't.

You should have no problem passing the sniffer, however visual inspection might be another problem (if you are not altering things like timing and fuel... If you alter these then your odds of passing go down)
The battle you face with the turbo is that it soaks up so much of the engines exhaust heat that the cat doesn't heat up enough to become effective. If you drive at least 30min. or so to give the cat time to heat up before going to the inspection you should have no problem passing.

You will not pass. Also, don`t expect any of thuse guys that are making bolt-on boost kits to get CARB Certification. It`s too expensive and time consuming.
