Almost the opposite of a hybrid.

Not sure what you're expecting for feedback frofro... This kind of thing almost certainly is inferior to a mehanically driven supercharger. Especially since the aftermarket for such parts exists for S2000s.

Wow, excellent set of (negative) references, XV! Serious caveat emptor!

These are pretty much all of them. I didn't find one positive thread.

There's a company making a real electric supercharger. Requires it's own battery packs and uses 3 starter motors to turn over what looks like a roots type supercharger. They tested it, it works like No2, you get a boost, then the batterys need to be recharged for the next pass/run or whatever.

I'm not sure why they built it but, it did work.

[I'll ignore this particular product and talk about the concept in general.]

There are some definite advantages in using an electric supercharger and some disadvantages, too. Whether it should be used or not depends on how these balance out.

Advantages:

It is independent of RPM! You can tune the pressure boost to anything you like. You don't have to worry about wasting boost via blow-off valves or dealing with no boost at mid-to-low RPMs.

You can package it anywhere you want. The supercharger does not have to be placed in line with the crank pulley.

Disadvantages:

You have to convert (with losses) the mechanical energy of the engine into electrical energy, transmit it (with losses) through cables, and convert it (with losses) back to mechanical energy in the supercharger.

You also need an electric motor, which is heavy.

The bottom line:

In the future, cars will have much higher voltage electrical systems, which will allow things like an electrical supercharger to be efficient enough to buy their way onto the car. But at 12V, it's just not practical.

...because the idea intrigued him.
