Default Uniden GPS Radar Detector ($220)

Uniden is advertising a GPS radar detector in Motor Trend this month. I've never heard of this product before.

Anyone ever heard of this thing? http://www.uniden.com/GPSRD/

Are it's GPS features BS?

Is it a decent radar detector?

Don't you normally have to pay subscription fees for GPS service? I'm GPS ignorant...forgive me.

to the best of my knowledge, its not subscription based at all not for non-miltary use and military use, well, its just encrypted.

but what I dont get, "distnace to go" do you mean I gotta enter in where I'm going with that little readout and those buttons? sorry, I'm not sold one bit. sounds like a marketing sham to me. I just want the radar detector to do one thing and not beep or tell me anything otherwise - tell me if radar is going off!

I looked at this model recently and think it is a very interesting concept.. GPS is a good way to gauge speed and direction and the database is new stuff. Maybe these things are finally evolving to a more comprehensive and integrated tool. Unfortunately the Uniden detectors have never been great and the last I tried was so bad with falsing that I gave it away.

GPS is definitely not subscription based. In fact, it's eveolved into such an instument for running businesses (tracking commercial vehicles and setting time), that the economy would probably suffer if they did figure out a way to charge for it.
