Default Unofficial Count of (US) S2000's

Using an excel spreadsheet, knowledge of VIN numbers, the Honda Ownerlink Website, and some automation software, I was able to calculate the breakdown of US S2000's by year, color, interior, and trim (CR or base). My numbers should not be considered official or exact in any way but I believe they are very close. This is for US production only. This will not necessarily match up with sales numbers by year (since they are production numbers). Details on how I figured out the breakdown and potential pitfalls are below.

Interesting Stats:
Total S2000's - 66,860
Total AP1's - 36,968
Total AP2's - 29,892
Total CR's (including those w/o a/c and audio) - 699
Total CR's without a/c and audio - 59
First S2000 - MY00 serial #27
Last S2000 - MY09 serial #357
Last S2000 from Tochigi - MY04 serial #6062 (11th digit of VIN = "T")
First S2000 from Suzuka - MY04 serial #1 (11th digit of VIN = "S")
Most common color - Silverstone (18,814)
Least common color - Apex Blue (200)
Most common color combination - Silverstone / Black (13,261)
Least common color combination - Grand Prix White / Yellow/Black (90)
Black Interiors - 47208
Blue Interiors - 6148
Red Interiors - 6986
Red/Black Interiors - 3896
Tan Interiors - 1923
Yellow/Black Interiors - 699
*I'm still a bit confused on specifically what years offered all red interior and what years offered red/black. Designation of "Red" or "Red/Black" is, for now, directly off what the Honda Ownerlink Website lists.

How I got the numbers:
I started to try to find the number of CR's produced. I came across this thread concerning what the NSX and Type-R guys went through: http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1492748. It involved listing out all the VIN's for those vehicles and checking them against the Honda Ownerlink website. The ownerlink website will tell you the year, make, model, trim, and color of your vehicle if it is a VIN in their system.

I came up with all the VIN's for 2008 (which is quite easy if you understand how VIN's work) and used some automation software to enter in the VIN's into the Honda website and save the results. After I figured out how many CR's were produced, I realized that with some small tweaks to the automation process, I could get a complete breakdown for the entire S2000 (US) production.

VIN's
VIN's tell a lot about a car and since the S2000 is a relatively low production car with few options I was able to compile a list of all potential VIN's. All S2000 VIN's will start with JHMAP#1 - this says they are Japan Honda Motors, AP1 or AP2, manual transmission). The next digit will be a 4 for base trim models and 2 for CR. The next digit is a check digit calculated from the the digits in the vin. This is then followed by the model year, production plant (T for Tochigi or S for Suzuka), then serial #.

There are a lot of missing VIN's from the early serial numbers for MY00, MY04, and MY06 leading me to my guess that these vehicles are crash or epa test vehicles (new body styles, engine, dbw). There are some missing VIN's scattered among regular S2000 production as well. By missing VIN's I'm referring to VIN's that came up as invalid when entered into Honda Ownerlink.

Potential for mistakes:
1) Honda ownerlink website and/or database is wrong
2) automation software "hiccuped"
3) There are some missing VIN's. I believe these are cars that were produced but not distributed to the US population. My guess is they are crash or epa test vehicles, fell off the boat, are in a museum, etc. I have no basis for these guesses
4) There may exist VIN's past the last vin I checked for the model year. Once I started to get a bunch of invalid vin's, I stopped looking for that year.

'02 and '03 were the only years that all red interior was offered. In '02 it was the silvers, white and black, and '03 it was just the silvers.
