any other car I would warn you to make sure it's not a manufacturer buyback, but I'm not too sure the S2000 would have a major problem in the first 400 miles. Even so, I would want to see all the service records, because you can actually sell a Lemon as a certified pre-owned. (Land Rover dealers do it on a regular basis).

It PROBABLY is not an issue, as cars get returned all the time (impulse buy, wife flips, etc.), but I would double check just to make sure.

I have a little problem.
I found the dealer who has the only yellow '05 S2000 within 50 miles from here. He is willing to sell it for $29.5k + tax. The problem is, the car is an "unwanted vehicle." It has 400 miles on the odometer, first registered in early July. Carfax history is clean. I have no idea why it has been returned. The dealer is trying to pitch it as new ( there is a standard new-car sticker on the window ).
The same dealer has a couple of red S2K's, he would sell me one for 30k, but I prefer to have yellow.
Do you think it is safe to buy a car that has been driven for 400 miles and returned to the dealership?
Is it a reasonable price for such a car?
Is there anything I should pay special attention during the test drive?
Thanks
They would laugh in your face if you tried to trade in this vehicle expecting anything near invoice. Treat it as a used car and expect at least $1500-2000 less than the best "new" deal you can find. Unless a sucker comes along, they really cannot price that in the same league as an untitled new car.

At $2000 under invoice, that would be a sweet find. You'd basically be profiting from someone else's dumb move. Don't let the dealer profit from it! (they probably already did).

haha, i saw the wife flips out happen to a guy at a chevy dealer i worked at. The comes in one day, and buys a Purple SSR off the lot new, three days later it's back on the lot with a used sticker on it. What had happened was the guy bought it without telling the wife, when he got home with it she flipped out because it didn't match her purple Mercedes (go figure, it must be nice to have money) so she made him return it the next day. The guy lost a couple thusand on the car and only got to drive it about 100 miles

I don't think this car _has_ any service records.

For this car KBB gives "suggested dealer retail" $31k, which is of course over inflated. Edmunds gives $29k (clean) / $29.8k (outstanding).

Ok, I went to the dealership again, took the car for a test drive. The car was in an excellent condition, as far as I could tell, there was nothing wrong with it.

Long story short, I ended up buying it as certified pre-owned for 29k + tax, I don't think I could have gotten much better deal there ( they basically stopped me in the parking lot on my way out ). I guess I may have overpaid a bit because I wanted this color.

I'm happy

P.S. The car is a bit scary. First lesson: not to floor the gas pedal as you make the right turn from complete stop. Worked with Toyota Corolla, but definitely a dangerous thing to do with 240 hp on rear wheels.

Right now I'm thinking to offer them $30k if they get me a yellow one delivered straight from the factory. Is it possible? Does Honda still manufacture the '05 model?

Buying it as certified pre-owned is certainly a very good idea. 4 more years of powertrain warranty, option to finance with 4.49% APR, and I could get the price down somewhat. I doubt it's going to fly, though.

What does this mean?
Not sure how far Atlanta is but there are 2 yellow ones at the dealership by my house that have been sitting there for a few weeks. The dealerships should be able to trade for another color from a different dealership. I was looking for a specific color and they were willing to trade with a dealer about 500 miles away.
