Up close and personal encounter with StonGard
David of StonGard of GA was kind enough to send me a little sample of what it looked like. We actually put the sample, parts of it, on a green Expedition. All I can say is wow, it's cool. you could hardly see the lines and there was no color difference between the parts that had it and the parts that don't.
I am definately sold on the product... just need to have a few peopel intersted so they could send an installer down here. :-/

Yes,
You're right.
I'm sponsoring a groupbuy/group install here in IL and if anyone wants to see the product (in raw form, or on a car) let me know, I can arrange to meet with you.
This stuff is awesome, and the only thing I can say about it is why didn't anyone do this sooner/shy didn't I think of this?

I have seen several cars with stongard. Some good some bad. It is VERY installer dependent. One job on an NSX looked like sprayed on clear undercoating (read: orange peel). I have seen other jobs that look like there is nothing there.
I would be very wary on a black car.
I did my headlights but left the rest of the car alone. In my opinion a few scratches and chips look better than a bad job with stongard.

SCS2K is correct.
StonGard is very installer dependant, just like window tint, and on black cars, any "mistakes" will be more apparent simply because black paint will show all the dirt, pollen, scratches and imperfections in the paint to begin with such as orange peel. StonGard does not have an orange peel to it, but if the paint has it, then it will show up on the surface of the StonGard. This is why we require training to become an authorized installer, and not everybody that attends the training gets authorized.
There are other products out there that have copied StonGard and are only interested in getting the product out there, as long as the installers check clears for the product, they are good to go. Other companies only supply the raw material and actually have the installer cut the product on your car with a razor blade!
The installer going to Houston recieved the highest marks from StonGard's National Trainer, so I am confident he will have everyone interested after they see his work. He is way ahead of me, and I did this car (mine).

Dave,
Looking very good!!!! I've now seen a couple of bad installs, and some very good installs.
This guy StonGard trained in IL, Jim Stanglor is AWESOME!!!! I got a chance to see this black Porsche Boxster he did with StonGard. He HAD to point out to me that the car has StonGard on it. . .here I thought that I would be able to see the StonGard on a black car with my naked eye.
Jim gave me heads up on a black finish...try to get an extra thick coat of wax on the "un-StonGarded" finish and a light coat of wax on the StonGard material. Remove the wax build up at the seam of the StonGard using a Q-Tip with a very light touch. This way the finishing shine matches, but the seam is hidden a bit more. I've always had an affinity for pristine finished black cars, and this Porsche was VERY well done.
Mind you, he told me that he did the Porsche maybe a year ago, it wasn't a recent job. My opinion is that if it stood up to a year's worth of driving in IL and the finish can still look like that, I'm willing to spend the money (for the StonGard and for the professional install).
My point is that the work of the installer is very important, if it's not done properly, then you won't be as excited.
