UPS damaged my new diff...what should I do?
I would submit a claim. Fedex broke my Comptech supercharger shaft in half during shipment for my TL-TypeS. They forked out $1700 to pay for the damages they caused. I still have the broken shaft in my garage from when comptech sent me back the charger after repairs. It took a month for the adjuster to come out and look at the damages. All in all it took about 2 months to recieve my charger >=/

So you didn't repackage it before it shipped out back to UPS? WTH? Why would anyone think that if it arrived all beat to hell the first time that it would not continue to deteriorate. Maybe it's just me, and I have no idea how the diff was packaged inside the original box but it does appear that it was probably not packaged properly the first time. Seems to me that if you didn't want additonal damage, that you would have put the original package into another box with additional protection.

Did you pay for declared value/insurance when you shipped it? If not of course they're going to deny you. If so then that's another story and depends on the packaging etc. My guess is that both items were shipped ground as well.
I'm glad to hear FedEx claims paid for the damages, we're usually pretty fair about paying out if you insured it and it was packaged well.

I just ordered the following replacement parts:
Stub bolt (1)
Output shaft assembly (1)
The output shaft assembly is on back order and will take 3-5 business days to arrive. Once these items have been received I will have them professional installed, and then turn around and ship the diff back to Shu. This time I will ship it in a heavy duty plastic container with padding, bubble wrap and popcorn.

SOHCmyDOHC:
Fragile stickers won't do anything concerning the handling of the package, just gives the customer a piece of mind. It is often said in the shipping business that a fragile sticker just means throw it a little farther and harder. Heavy stickers allow the drivers and whomever is going to pick it up ask for help or roll the package rather than try to lift it.
2QYK4U: concerning if UPS dropped the package once or numerous times, probably YES, but that doesn't really matter. do you think any shipping company really carries your package from one spot to another with extra care??? not really. they require certain packaging requirements because they know it will more than likely be dropped several times. UPS actually trains packers to package all packages to be able to restrain a 10 FEET drop becuase that would be the worst case scenario.
Now back to the damage claim you filed and has been denied. More than likely you won't be able to get a $ from them simple because YOU PACKAGED IT, nothing else. Even if you packaged it 100% correctly, it would still be denied, but you do have some recourse. Did you ship this out of a THE UPS STORE or did you take it to one those contractors? I'm assuming contractor because you got the box back. If it was THE UPS STORE they would have got it back and contacted you. If it was with a contractor you are SOL. If with THE UPS STORE, contact the owner and ask him to recontact the insurance company (its not through UPS) and ask to have them change it to CENTER PACKED. Everything packaged through THE UPS STORE is 100% covered no matter how it was packaged.
I can go on and on, but don't have the time nor the patience....
If you want some more ideas or want to know more about how claims work via UPS PM me your contact # and I'll help you out as best I can.
PS. FEDEX claim service sucks and they will try to deny your claim several times for the dumbest reason unless you really know what you are doing
Maybe next time put a Fragile or HEAVY marking/sticker on a box

2. The 10ft drop requirement is ridiculous. With an item such as this, I would need to spend $50 on packaging alone to withstand a 10ft drop. I charged Shu $50 to ship this, and it cost me over $100 for shipping (including packaging) and obviously enough care wasn't given.
3. The package was shipped from a UPS store. They got the diff back but did not contact me. I contacted them, and got nothing but attitude. I was so pissed my wife volunteered to pick up the diff, and when she did so the attitute continued. A worker from the UPS store put the package on a dolley, wheeled it outside, dumped it on the parking lot, and said "have a great day". We have already filed complaints with UPS Corporate for the poor customer service. Yeah...that will go somewhere.
So, I have ordered the replacement parts for the two damaged parts, will have them installed, and will ship the diff back to Shu with "UPS approved" packaging. Of course Shu will need to pay for 50% of the parts cost and the shipping cost, because honestly I have done above and beyond the call of duty here.
Sorry to hear THE UPS STORE was such an ass to you. Funny how you are located in SD and THE UPS/MBE training center is in SD... Did you speak to the owner of the UPS store? If not, definetly do. With the return shipping of the diff., do not package it yourself. Allow the UPS Store to do it. You may pay more ($20 or so), but no matter what happens, it will be covered.
If you really want to make an effective complaint, call them and talk to the owner. If he still isn't helpful, ask to speak to his area rep (trust me he/she has one). If you really want to get crazy, go to the MBE training center in SD and talk to the guy that handles claims for UPS.
