This CAN be used to protect the top, right?

I thought I heard this stuff was banned... anyhow, our local grocery store has about 4-5 cans left on the shelf at 9 bucks each, so I was thinking about picking up a can for the top...

Of course, I have heard you need to mask off the entire car to avoid overspray... is there a better product to use for maintaining the top?

Or is Scotchguard great, but outlawed?

thanks!

I don't know whether or not Scotchguard works on convertible tops. It certainly is NOT what's been used by most members of this board.

For convertible top care, click here for the section at S2Ki.com that addresses this topic:
https://www.s2ki.com/faqs/faq_verttop.php

Hope this helps.

S2K_CLS: I'm the one that raised the issue. See my post "Top Protectorant: California Regulations" (01/05/01). The responses there provide alternatives and net purchase sites. If you're interested in 4 cans, that probably would be adequate for about 12 years. 303, I believe, says you can do about four tops per can. I have no independent knowledge that 303 has Scotch Guard or whether what I was told at a parts house is true. I made a purchase on the net. I just found it difficult to find a top protectorant at auto supply houses. dgl1

The Porsche top protectant is made from Scotch Guard. I would guess any Scotch Guard would work just as well but I could be wrong. Yes, you will need to mask the car. Ususally just drop the top, lay newspaper over the windows and raise it again.

I'm not sure about the 303 fabric protectant. But I remember reading something about 303 Fabric Protectant soon being the only game in town because of the Scotch Guard problems. This would lead me to believe it's not made of Scotch Guard.

S2K_CLS: (Follow up). I just returned from my local Target store. They had plenty of ScotchGuard. ($6.00+/can). So what I was told as being the reason for the absence of top protectorant does not seem to be true. However, they do have a large autocleaning section. Again, there was no soft-top protectorant.(303, Porsche). Maybe its the UV chemical, and UV protection is what I was interested in. Ergo, to the web. dgl1
