Valve Spring & Retainer Question

Just curious, but can the retainers be changed without pulling the head? This might be where the 20hours comes from (especially if the guy on the phone thought they'd have to be removed to be inspected. The one valve spring compression tool that I saw/used had to press against the bottom of the valve, and this would require the head to be removed.

If it could be done without removing the head, this would make for dangerous driveway DIY. You'd need to make sure the piston was a tdc so that a loose valve wouldn't just fall in.

Someone with a service manual want to take a quick look and satisfy my curiousity...

Yes, but not with the official Honda tools and procedures.
