Default the VTEC kick

On the power curves provided by Honda there is absolutely no evidence of a power jump at high revs. Why is that ?

I'm not familiar with dyno smoothing and how it works, but I don't think that graph smoothing is lying if they take peak numbers at wider RPM intervals and graph it. If you take more samples at say ever 10 RPM, you're graph is going to look choppy compared to a graph sampled at ever 1000 RPM. The peak numbers will still be the same.

Look at it like a thumbnail picture on a website, that small little 100x100 pixel image doesn't have much detail but you get the general idea of what is in it, when you click and it's now the full res 900x600 pixel image, you can see much more detail.

also, i'm sure that chart uses averages from hundreds of individual dyno tests. when you take averages from so many samples, chances are the "irregularities" get "smoothed" out.

btw, from the look of that chart, there should be no "VTEC kick" in our motors cuz for the most part, the graph is pretty linear. personally, my experience with the f20c pretty much reflects the results of that chart, yet so many owners on the board swear that they can feel a "VTEC kick"...i wonder if it's just psychological...

^ definitely *NOT* just psychological. many many other dyno graphs by owners have shown the leap upwards at 6000rpm.

this graph is just smoothed... or wrong. maybe the marketing department didn't want our engine to look weird, and have ignorant people look at the graph and say, "ewwww. that's weird. I dunno if I want to spend $32K for a weird engine..."

Essentially it shows there's not much of a real kick which was also my impression when I drove the 03. If it weren't for the little drop off at the end of the low range cams as they begin to run out of steam just before the switch over it would be fairly linear. It's kinda like stores marking things up just before they put them "on sale" . Makes people feel better but doesn't really do anything for them. I don't mean to say that the VTEC isn't advantageous as it clearly is, just that there is really no big spike up in power from an overall standpoint. It will be interesting to see what a more detailed graph of the 2.2 curves look like. From the drive I took I suspect it will not show the drop off at the end of the low cams that the 2.0 has.
