Honda uses their 10W30 conventional oil for the S2000, correct? That's what they used on my car for the first oil change. I made the switch to synthetic myself on my 2nd change at 7500 miles

Too much oil is bad but too much oil won't affect vtec engagement. If it isn't burning or leaking, you're likely fine with the oil level. Unfortunately without looking at the car with a scantool, you're kind of shooting in the dark with a diagnosis.

If a sensor is causing the computer to think that something is wrong, and not allowing VTEC, then it is possble that the car is running in a less than optimal manner and could be less than great for the car. Just as an example, TW (Temp. Water) sensor might report cold, then the car will not only disallow VTEC but it'll also run rich. If it were mine, I'd get it checked out sooner rather than later.

Synthetic or not will vary from dealer to dealer. My dealership uses synthetic only when a customer asks for it or when they bring their own.

Maybe they traded your car out for a MY04 and you didn't realize it.

I'm sorry... I couldn't help myself! ha ha ha.
