someone did research on this. it's about 5 minutes after the water temp reaches operating temp that the car is officially warmed up.
but of course if it's idling the tranny and diff are still cold which is why you start up and drive to warm up everything

I usually wait long enough for the top to be down.

Anyone want to state WHY it's bad to idle? I'd think you'd want parts to be at/near temperature before loading them. Sure the car warms up quicker when you drive, but wouldn't you want to avoid loading the engine for a while?

Just let it heat up to 3 bars before you start vtecing it.
I start it up, let it idle long enough to be certain the oil pressure has stabilized (about 30 seconds) and drive off.

I've seen a number of folks recommend the three bars before VTEC. This mainly comes from the fact that the ECU won't let you VTEC until after three bars! It's Honda's way of protecting the engine from idiots who try to run the engine too hard before it's properly warmed up.

As for me, my experience has been that my car hit's the three bar point within a half mile of the house (or sooner!) and as far as I'm concerned, that's still WAY too early to be pushing the engine hard enough to VTEC. I generally wait until the temp gauge is at it's normal "fully warmed up" point before I even think about VTEC and sometimes I think that's a little early too. It's more than just the engine that should be up to operating temps before pushing the car hard.

pre 04 have 3 bars til warm unlike the 04-05 6 bars if i remember correctly. we complained about the temp gauage and honda listened with a more accurate one.
so when they are referring to 3 bars its 6 bars equivalent to us

Why not just let it idle? Read a previous post - not good for the engine - fuel misture is too rich.
