pre 04 have 3 bars til warm unlike the 04-05 6 bars if i remember correctly. we complained about the temp gauage and honda listened with a more accurate one.
so when they are referring to 3 bars its 6 bars equivalent to us
On my MY04, the temp gauge stabilizes at 8 bars. That's about 3 or 4 bars short of half way around.

FWIW!

8? It's 7 on any '04 I've come across (including my own)

If it hasn't been answered... The fuel is too rich when you start it up, plugging the cats and anything else on the exhuast side. Just drive sanely for a few minutes, without getting over a several thousand RPMS... This will warm it up safely, getting it to efficient oil circulating temperatures without loading parts... Wait until completely warm before Vtec!

By the time I manoeuver out of my parking garage, the secondary air pump shuts off. It's another couple minutes before I am on the public streets, and another couple to the Autobahn. I'm normally just getting 3 bars at that point, so keeping the speeds down for several more minutes takes a lot of discipline

It seems like the longer I let the car idle after initial startup, the less responsive it is when driving.
probably because of the built-up heat in the engine bay by idling too long (the intake sucks up hot air = less power).

btw to those who vtec as soon as 3 bars are on the temp gauge:

the temp gauge is only for the water temp. oil takes longer to warm up than the water temp so it is a good idea to wait a little longer to vtec, even though you have 3 bars on the temp gauge.

someone did research on this. it's about 5 minutes after the water temp reaches operating temp that the car is officially warmed up.
but of course if it's idling the tranny and diff are still cold which is why you start up and drive to warm up everything
Good point.

8 bars is normal for my '04.
And don't forget about warming up - the engine might be warm with 3+ bars - but what about transmission and differential?? If you have just been sitting there idling, they are STONE COLD.

Best to drive it slowly and let ALL the lubricants reach normal operating tempuratures before VTEC!! IMHO

I used to actually let my car idle for about 3-4 minutes before i got in to drive off, because i wanted to ensure 3 bars so i could vtec whenever i wanted. but then there was a post about this about 2-3 months back saying that its bad to let your car idle for so long. ever since then.. i get in my car, start her up, put seatbelt on, change radio station.. and then i'm off
however, question for those in regards to the 3bars is the water temp, oil temp takes a lil bit longer. Engine wise i have: Hondata Intake Mani Gasket, Spoon Raditor Hose, Spoon Radiator Cap, Spoon Thermostat & Spoon Thermoswitch.. so it takes a lil bit of time for my car to reach 3 bars, and when it does reach 3 bars, its very common on cold nights to flip back & forth between 2 & 3 while driving. is it still okay to hit vtec when its on the 2bars?

This is a no brainer question!! I just turn on my car head out on the street with only 1 bar and take it up to 6k like 6 times in a row. (You can't take it above 6k cause it won't allow you to do such a deed) Before you know it your car has 3bars on it.
