In most cars, the best mpg comes in highest gear without lugging engine, so 45 mph is my guess.
You can be at 35 in 6th without lugging the engine too...

This is not exactly the same, but similar conclusion can be drawn: My '00 E430 has 5-speed automatic transmission and trip computer, one day a while back I tried various speeds from 40 to 70 with increament of 5 mph for 1 mile each try on level road. The best gas mileage of that E430 on that day was about 31 MPG at 45 mph, at 40 mph the mileage dropped to 27 MPG, at 50 mph the mileage was 29.5 MPG and the faster the speed above 50, gas mileage reducing. At 70 mph the gas mileage was about the same as it was at 40 mph.

For the S, the best gas mileage should be around 45 to 50 mph. But what fun is it to drive it at that slow speed on open roads ?

And get a solar powered water heater to compromise.

i drive about 85 miles a day back and forth from work.. avg about 75mph, hit vtec once a day.. I have been getting around 25-26 mpg.. 02 spa yellow with 20k miles.. at 75mph and 6th gear usually cruising at 4-5k rpm i think.. in any case, the gas mileage is better than i expected.. i used to drive an 87 300zx turbo and i only got around 20mpg ( i was also only 20-23 yrs old and hitting top speed every open highway)..
I say spa yellow like it improves gas mileage..
