Just picked up my new '02 Blue S2000.
Shifts very well but notice a slight roughness
going into third gear. Is this normal?
How long would you wait before applying the first
wax job?

Apply the wax as soon as you can.

As for 3rd gear... do you feel a catch? I think that's fairly "normal"... mines done that since new and I know other's have reproted it.

 

Alot of us have that 3rd gear notchy deal going on

 

A couple of adjustments to your technique can minimize the 2-3 notch:
1) Pause a moment with the stick in the neutral position before going into 3rd.
2) Give a little extra gas (rev-match with a little extra). I've found that letting the synchros work 'from above', RPM-wise, instead of below seems smoother.
3) Be extra careful & slow until the tranny is well warmed up.

Unless I'm being really careful, I generally feel the notch a bit, but it's pretty minimal with the above techniques.

Yes it is a catch or notch and it seems to go away
