Has anyone in the quest for weight reduction replaced thier standard alternator (13 - 14lbs) for a light weight one which are about 6lbs?

I mean, really, this is reminiscent of the guy who wanted a carbon fiber hood prop rod because it would save less than an ounce.

Seriously, there are examples of S2000's here (one of them being Krazik's car, a site admin) that have been brought down to near the 2200 lb mark (maybe less by now) and I don't think reducing the weight of the alternator was part of it. Reducing a little bit of weight is superfluous. You gotta think big, but your car won't look like anything you'd recognize afterwards.

.
I'm aware that just reducing one thing eg alternator wont do a great deal but combined it with a lot of other "sensible" weight reduction measures it all adds up.

I'm trying to attain weight savings here and there and among the items that can be possibly changed the alternator is one such heavy item.

I have located a place that makes light weight alternators circa 6lbs and the only thing that would be needed to do would be to fab up some sort of mounting structure.

It would be interesting to know if anybody else has gone down this route and any pit falls they had regarding mounting such an item.
