edit: also, i just picked up 2 quarts of oil, and put them in. i started the car, and it didnt make the noise. does this mean my car is burning oil? there's never any pools of liquid underneath my car.

My MY03 has the "baby spooling" noise when it first starts up as well.
Is it a hissing sound or a fast ratcheting sound ?
The fast ratcheting sound is the timing chain tensioner. These seem to be failing prematurely in increasing numbers. Billman250 of the Metro NYC gang has noted & repaired this problem on several early -> late model S's...

definitely timing chain tensioner then - IIRC the part is approx $55 and you could check with Billman250 on how much he charges or what's appropriate if you have someone else do the replacement.
Possible DIY if you have moderate mechanical ability. I expect we'll have a tech day on long island some time before Fall Colors n- if you choose to hold out unitl then and would come to mineola you could have the TCT switched out then. Stop in on the metro NYC forum and inquire within.
