German and most European highways are meticulously maintained and their surface as as smooth as a pool table.

Here in the US, or at least here in Northern California, I would be very careful.. Our highways are a mess.

I almost lost control of my S2000, 3 weeks ago, while driving at around 120mph when I encountered an unexpected large bump on the road. The car started wobbling all over, and I almost lost control of the car. Scared myself to death.

If you want to some high speed run, please make sure that you do it on a stretch of road that you are very familiar with.

Just my $.02

As far as US roads vs European, what do you expect in a country that pays relatively low taxes vs many European countries (per capita), yet continually makes cutting taxes a big issue? You want kick-butt roads? You gotta be willing to pay for them If we were paying $4/gallon for gas with $3 of that being for road maintenance, we'd be able to afford some really nice roads! Ironic that we complain about the road quality, yet increasing the funding for roads is considered "growing big government" and is considered taboo.

I'm not sure that 75% of the petrol revenue goes on the roads but your point about "you get what you pay for" is valid.

For your comparison I pay

the stretch of 280 South all between Hillsborough and Belmont is pretty good (at least for Bay Area standards) for high speed cruising. well, at least for 140 mph in an S-Class Mercedes.
I was leaving San Francisco and entering 280 South from 6th street. Very late at night no one there, floored it until I hit this huge bump on the middle lane. It happened exactly before the junction between 101S and 280S.

I do agree however that 280S is the "best" road for high speed driving.

Let's be careful out there!

Ausfahrt is the largest city in Germany. No matter where you go, there you are.

I went to K-town High!

Actually, I think that's not one town, but several all with the same name.

I've only driven the autobahn during one week-long trip. It was wonderful. I noticed that more people blink their silly lights here than do on the autobahn. Going 160 km/hr and being passed by a Mercedes with a family and luggage is a treat.

But the one time I drove through a storm, I realized the camber of the road is less than here - good for high speed dry, but not so good wet.
