Default What air filter to replace stock with?

I just checked my air filter today and it seems like it needs to be changed.

I'm thinking of getting something a little better than the paper stuff. Anyone have experience with the Comptech filter? I'm talking about the filter, not the intake kit. I like that it's rewashable. Is it any good? Or are there better alternatives out there? I saw the spoon filter but that seems a bit pricey to me for just an air filter.

I saw that there is also a K&N replacement filter as well... has anyone on these boards tested cotton filters vs the foam filters? I found a partial thread on it from Honda-Tech but it kind of dead ended before someone came with the results of flowbench testing and filtration.

Man I spent alot of time researching on the internet over paper vs K&N vs foam... the debate seems endless. I can't tell a clear winner because every site seems to have some sort of a bias. Can't find independent lab results. Everyone seems to say their filter outflows AND outfilters the competition.

Anyone done any oil analysis to see which of the high performance filters actually filters well?

Not exactly OEM replacements but brand wise here's a comparison (has the k&n at least) -- http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/1/ . I wish apexi made one for our car. I had one on my mr2 and loved it. It was by far the best made I've seen, pricey though. I personally run the spoon filter and snorkel and like the setup but again it's waaaaay overpriced for an air filter.

do you use the comptech cleaner for your spoon filter. mine is kinda not the same color as new anymore, and i can't seem to rejeuvenate it. i used water and soap. i hope i don't have to get a new one.

Wow, now thats the kind of test we need.. dyno AND filtration.

Is the HKS foam filter the same type of foam used as the Comptech? If it is, then dang, the Comptech will suck.

I wish Apexi made their filter for our cars. Looks like I may go with K&N in the meantime, unless someone has another test that shows that the Comptech foam is better than the HKS foam (and also better than K&N and Apexi cotton).

I have had the JR Filter on my S for 3 years and love it.

http://www.j-w-racing.co.uk/acatalog/s2kairfilters.html

I use a pro grade lubricant and typically wash these things about every three years, keep in mind I old get to drive my cars 7 months a year. I have had this type of filter on my '90 CRX-SiR for almost its entire life, and with 9,000 track miles and an overall mileage of 95,000 I can say the compression test last year was darn close to the results I got from the compression test back in '91. I believe the key is to not over wash them and to be sure they are 100% dry after washing and really seak them down good with the filter lube and then blot off the extra.

I have foam filters on all my vehicles
'85 Honda Nighthawk 650
'90 Honda CRX-SiR
'95 Nissan XE-V6 4x4 KC
'02 Honda S2000

the comptech would be different from the hks. when you oil it down you massage it in. doesn't look you can do it with that being that the chicken wire is on the outside and not the inside.
people who get oil on the MAF are over oiling it.

another suggestion (what I did) was buy this material known as cheese cloth and fill it with pellitized carbon and fit that over the intake. make sure both sides are closed so you dont get too much carbon inside your engine. more horespower as well as odor removal. cant beat that right?

I have a K&N replacement and I think it works fine. You can't go wrong with a K&N and I did notice a little bit of improved throttle repsonse, but not much. I like foam filters vs. paper/cotton on panel filters, but on conical filters, you'll be quite satisfied with the K&N.

For the price and everything, the K&N is a no-brainer for an OEM setup.
