I have had the JR Filter on my S for 3 years and love it.

I use a pro grade lubricant and typically wash these things about every three years, keep in mind I old get to drive my cars 7 months a year. I have had this type of filter on my '90 CRX-SiR for almost its entire life, and with 9,000 track miles and an overall mileage of 95,000 I can say the compression test last year was darn close to the results I got from the compression test back in '91. I believe the key is to not over wash them and to be sure they are 100% dry after washing and really seak them down good with the filter lube and then blot off the extra.
I have foam filters on all my vehicles

Do the benefits outweigh the costs? Have you compared this to the K&N? Seems like when the websites I come across run tests, they do not do prolonged tests. The filter, no matter what kind, will act differently once it has had about 500 miles of use. It will have built up a layer of dirt at that point, which not only changes the flowrate, but affects further filtration as well.
A test, if one exists, which simulates 1000+ miles of usage, to see who has the best filtration and flowrate at the end of the day, will be a much more ac curate test than spending 30 seconds sucking in dirt.
pm mptuning. I think he still sells the sprint filter. It's the one I had before I bought the spoon. It's another wash/dry filter that doesn't require any oiling and is supposed to offer good filtration as well as better flow. I think they were under $50 too shipped iirc.

Currently I'm leaning towards the K&N unless someone can convince me otherwise that the Comptech is better (they both cost about the same).... the JR looks promising but is kinda pricey and I can't find any comparisons online for it. Spoon is too expensive too. It's actually exactly like the comptech but has more surface area.. but $250 for an air filter is rediculous.
I decided to take a stab in the dark and I bought a filter called Green filter. It's like the K&N but is made of different materials. Alot of WRX/STi guys in Europe use them, so I decided to try it out. I should be receiving it soon.
