People didn't demand more torque, they wanted an engine that responded better before redline.

F22c has revised cams, increased stroke, gearing, ECU mapping, and bored engine - all to make it less anemic under 6k rpms - peak power/torque band was shifted down by ~1000 rpm and the engine makes much more power before VTEC. Piston speed on the F22C is the same at ~8k rpm as ~9k rpm on the F20C, so for strain on the engine parts, plus the fact that there is not the need to go to 9k rpm, Honda lowered the redline. The F22C doesn't have as high a redline, but its a better-rounded engine that puts out more power, and does it sooner. Add the more aggressive gearing, and the car responds better at lower rpm. Honda made ~2,000 changes to the S2000 for 2004, these are just a few.
Amen.

Americans demanded more torque. That's why we were the only ones with the 2.2 for the first few couple years after its introduction.
I was under the impression we still are.

Back in 2001, a group of us from the US and various European countries went to Japan to visit with S2000 owners there, check out the Tochigi factory, Twin Ring Motegi, Honda Hall, etc. We met with the designer of the S2000 - one of our members specifically asked about an engine design with more low-end torque. My theory, based on no evidence whatsoever, is that meeting was the genesis of the idea of the F22C engine.
