Default What to look out for when buying used s2000?

Anybody know common problems of s2000?

It is 2002 model, 27k miles on it.

I am either thinking of financing the car or leasing the car, but I hear bad things about leasing from people, and you can't mod your car.

If I finance the car it'll make me feel better in that I actually own the car, but I don't want to be in trouble financially.

Any suggestions?

It would be greatly appreciated if you can tell me some common problems with s2000 and warn me ahead of time of what might go bad.

btw, I'm new to this forum hello ppl, this place looks like a good forum

If leasing, make sure you only average around 65% of the allowed mileage.. i.e. If your lease allows for 12k miles, make sure you only average 8k. If your doing the lease to make your monthly payment feasible, it is "highly probable" you are making the wrong decision. If it's "moderately probable" you will destroy the mileage allowance, you will end up ultimately financing this S2000 for much longer than any standard auto-finance agreement may provide. I say ~70% of allowed mileage because you never know when might have 2 get in your S2000 and travel, move, etc... It only takes a single occurence. (please, no "I would do's", thnx) If you can handle the jump on the mileage hurdle, remember your residual is negotiable at lease end & watch the cap cost. Take the car to CarMax and get it appraised.

Sometimes I think I should have leased, I don't want to mod and I've done better than thought I would on miles. I could have walked away in two years easy. I sincerely decided to buy vs. lease because I thought/was told the car would end production soon. Luckily, the car's bad ass either way

So, on to financng... I the payments happen to pinch, money is tight and you want to mod, how much fun are you looking forward to? Otherwise, how confident are you in the "actual" growth rate of your personal wealth.. hehe..

I have 2002, haven't had a single mechanical problem. If was buying the very car I own as a used vehicle, It would have to be Honda Certified or full inspected by a trusted H-dealer. Before I bought my 02 last december, I was looking at 00'#4314 Black/Red, it was at a Mitsubishi dealer. They offered to send it to Honda no prob(granted, my Honda dealer was across the street.

thx so much for the reply

it helped me decide, because the mileage per year is 11k on this one and I don't think I can drive 7k-8k per year to be safe.

Besides if the car gets excessive dings and dents, I have to pay for the fix, so I want to finance the car now.

year 2002 s2000, 27k mileage.

Hopefully I can get the car, but I'm so into s2000 these days it's bothering me everyday.

In terms of "ownership", financing and leasing have more in common than you think. Please don't have the misconception that because you elect to finance a car, that it is yours. The vehicle is only fully yours once that final payment is made. Whereas in a lease, you have the option to buy out the vehicle at the end of the term. In both cases, as long as payments are being made, you can consider the car to be property of the financial institution. ie. What happens when you can't make those payments? Your decision to finance or lease should come down to other factors, such as the monthly payments/monthly budget, your yearly mileage, etc.

As for reliability, sources like Consumer Reports have only good things to say about the S2000 and reliability history has been excellent. It's a Honda...

Good luck with getting the car. Just make sure you think things through and don't rush into a situation that might come back to haunt you...

Only problem I had with my 02 was drivers side window wouldn't go all the way down when dropping the top. Dealer fixed. Also earlier 02's had a spark plug recall.

I have not had any serious problems, and they were all covered under warranty.

Look at my maintenance log and judge for yourself: http://s2000.home.att.net/s2000/maintenanc...ce_expenses.htm

One problem that some S2000 owners have, is that they realize, after the initial excitement has worn off, that it is not a suitable car for them. Others, like myself, enjoy their S2000 even more, the longer they own it.

Daniel,

You can also get the milege raised. I had mine raised from 12k to 15k. About a $14 per month difference.
I'm leasing a used '03 for 4 years. This was financially the best decision for me.

I changed my mind again

I might lease the car, because my family is financing a nissan murano right now

39 month lease

$200/month on good credit with 2800 down payment including tax and all that stuff

11k mileage per year(anybody think 11k mileage is not enough for a year?)

the only thing i'm worried about leasing is that. At the end of the term, I would have to fix all the damages done to the car.
And the insurance cost on this car.
