Default What makes a car loud?

I'm just wondering about what makes a car loud. Here is what I understand. Please correct me if I'm wrong, and answer any questions.

The loudness of the exhaust is determined by the amount of load on the engine and the RPMs. This air goes through the muffler, which quiets the car down. What if you add a turbo/super charger to a car and leave the stock exhaust on, would the car be louder under WOT? Would this restrictive exhaust cause massive heat buildup around the cylinder head/header, sending the engine to an early grave?

I personally like quiet cars that are fast (12s or faster). Is it possible to accomplish this, and still have the car as quiet as it is stock?

Invidia exhaust ... I'm j/k. With a turbo S that can run 12's i'm assuming that you would need about 350whp (I am not a drag racing expert so please feel free to correct me), and i'm not really sure if the car would fall on its face in VTEC with the stock exhaust with about 8-10lbs of boost. I know that a lot of people say that the HKS is really restrictive and I just boosted 6lbs on stock compression on the dyno last week (~340whp) with no exhaust flow problems so it might be possible with the stock exhaust. An exhaust has a lot to do with a car being loud, but a turbo S, even with a stock exhaust still screams up top under WOT, and with an open wastegate there goes your quiet car. With a SC you will always have that SC whine, and i'm assuming that it only gets louder as you up the boost.

Can you run a turbo / SC with stock exhuast, yes there are a couple people running stock exhaust with a SC / turbo. Is it the best thing...power wise no but if you like the stealthy car then its a good idea.

Stock exhaust or aftermarket, it will be louder with FI at WOT. There is no getting around that

High-compression and free-flowing exhaust makes for a loud car.

With a Turbo, wouldn't most of the exhaust gas be used to spin the turbo, making the car quieter?

no, there is this thing called wastegate ... most of it goes out from there,... if u were boosting with 90% of th exh... i think it will be around 100psi with 20 boost spike! hahah

yes, that's somewhat correct. A turbo'd car is much quieter than the same car NA. SRT4s don't have any mufflers, they rely on the turbo alone to keep things semi quiet. That's why you can hear them burble off-throttle stock.
