What should I expect from VTEC??
Hi,
I'm up to about 460 miles now, just waiting for the break in period to be over. I have no idea what to expect from the VTEC range once I get there. I've never been in another S2000 that has been there and I have never heard it either. Should I be ready to be totally blown away vs civic mode I am in right now??
Thanks
Drew

Just expect to get addicted... I'm pretty sure you'll be blown away. I've driven in VTEC for nearly 1-1/2 years now and am just breaking in a new s2000. It's torture. Although I really am happy with how zippy the car is even without being able to VTEC.
Get ready to enjoy!!!

Seeing that the S2000 is my first Honda I wasn't sure what VTEC would be like. Surely enough once I 'broke in' the engine and revved over 6k everything seemed to have stood still.
What an incredible feeling!

Personally, I wasn't blown away. It gets quicker but its not going to throw your head back and roast your tires. Its not like a turbo coming up to boost or anything like that. It is quite addictive though.
Don't set yourself up for a disappointment like I did. I bought into all the hype I read here about VTEC. Then when I hit 650 miles I took it to 9000rpm, shifted, took it to 9000 again and thought to myself, "that's it?" Don't get me wrong, it's exhilarating and I love this car but VTEC is not the life changing experience some would have you believe.

People in this forum over-hype VTEC, and make it seem like it is God's gift to cars. It really is not all that. It is a nice little kick, but don't expect a feeling like you just got rear-ended.
I think we have a new ricer crowd brewing in the S2000 community: "The VTEC Ricer."

I heard that the '02 and '03 models have a more subtle change over to VTEC. Of course all the subtleness goes out the window when shifting to 2nd breaks out the rear. ...even on strait, dry, albeit cold roads.
I've learned to be very gentle with 1st to 2nd gear shifts in VTEC range. How VTEC feels is subjective. As a newbie to RWD and the manual transmission, VTECing on public roads still scares the crap out of me. But it's a thrill every time .
