for the 4.56 gears, about how much will it cost to have it put on by the mechanic? Not to mention you gotta buy the $90 yellow box if you want an accurate spedometer

When you say "put on", what exactly do you mean? Do you mean you are getting only the ring and pinion gear set or are you intending on getting the entire pumpkin with the gearset already installed? If it's the first, your mechanica will need your car for the good part of a day. The gear install itself and calibration can take 3 to 4 hours alone. If you are getting the whole pumpkin, this part would take another 4 hours or so to remove the old one from the car and put the new one back in.

"Cheap" is a relative term. Let's say you don't any of it yourself. You buy the gears and related parts and Yellow Box for about $800.00 + shipping. Pay somebody to spend about 6 to 8 hours to do the work (let's say @ $60.00/hr.) for around $500.00, for a total of about $1400.00. This would be "like" adding about 25 whp.

Let's say you go the supercharger route. Again, you do none of the work. You're probably looking at around $5000.00. This would add about 80 to 90 whp in stock form.

Bang for the buck, the "gears" have got it.

PLEASE NOTE: For you guys with AP2 cars, putting on 4.56 gears might not be to your liking. Your top speed would be limited to about 135 mph and cruising rpm (@80mph) at around 4800 rpm. You must always consider the pros and cons of this sort of mod.

ps. Personally, if I had an AP2, I'd go with the supercharger.

AP1 with 4.56 gears would top out at 148.7 mph. Cruising @80 mph would be the same 4800 rpm, but realize that the AP1 has an extra 1000 rpm to play with over the AP2. Also, because of the increased stroke of the 2.2L, piston speeds would be higher at any given rpm compared to the 2.0L engine.

In my opinion, gearing on a stock AP2 is just about perfect. Honda finally got it right. This is not saying that it couldn't still benefit (acceleration wise) from having "gears", if that's what the owner prefers at the expense of decreased top speed and increased piston speeds at cruising speeds.

The S2000 does not have many "Cheap" mods. The ideas others have stated are a good start. I would try a drop in K&N with a knock off Spoon duct (EBAY). I wouldn't bother with a header....$800 plus install for a few HP? Gears are a better choice for the money. Cat backs vary and everyone has a different opinion so take it all with a grain of salt.

Stay Away from the Cheap EBAY stuff. OBX headers are a prime example of wasted money.

You may have to install the test pipe yourself. Removing the Cat is illegal and most mechanics do not want to risk the LARGE fine for removing one.

exhaust (the s2k exhaust is not very restrictive so this is mostly a weight reduction/cosmetic (sound) mod = 300 used to 1500
gears = 600

those are just some basic mods so u get an idea
My T1R 70mm exhaust is pretty nice... 40-50 pounds lighter and great mid-top end gains. I haven't dyno'd but there's definitely the 'butt dyno' effect.

I'd also like to note that it is the best sounding exhaust I've ever heard put on a 4 cylinder
