What will it take?
I currently own a 3rd gen rx7 and to be honest im sick of fixing this damn car, it seems like every time i get it fixed it breaks a week later... So Im looking for another car that has the feel as an FD, and ive narrowed it down to an ls1 fd or an s2k.. My main concern is the power loss if i switch to an s2k, no offense... But going from an 11 second car to a high 13 second car is a big difference to me...
My budget is around 25k and ive seen alot of 40-50k mile s2ks going for around 14-15k locally... So if I bought one for tops 16k and had the rest of the money to put into mods would it be possible to get it as fast as my fd, keeping the reliability factor? What exactly does it take to get an s2k up to that much power? Is it possible to do it without FI, or is FI a must? Some one enlighten me please.. Also im sorry I didnt do much searching, I looked for a faq section but didnt find one about power/1/4 times... Thx for helping out.. -Eric

FI is a must, and with ten grand, 400whp reliably is easy. a GT30R is a good ticket if you want the low end power, though you can go with a S/C and up the boost if you want a linear power curve. the car weighs ~2800lbs depending on MY, so 400whp should be pretty quick for a car that's not meant to be a dragster.
also, if 300-350whp will satisfy you, you can get a more reliable s/c setup and a small pulley for less money than a tuned turbo, though you lose the low end torque.
stock, the best runs are ~5.5 0-60 and about 13.8 et on the 1/4 at 98-102, but i dont know what times you'll run with 300-400whp.
also, at higher power levels, the rear differential will give if you launch it. there's a conversion kit available, but it costs another $3k, where you can usually find a used diff for ~$500 i hear. and the stock head goes neighborhood of 10psi, though ask the FI forum guys before you trust that--its more of hearsay coming from me. pistons are forged and such though, so that's about all you have to look at doing.

16k for a used AP1 and another 9k for a really nice turbo build will land you mid-500 rwhp easy with room to spare...that should satisfy your need for speed.
The s2k isn't known for being a drag car though...its close ratio transmission will have you grabbing 4th or even 5th by the end of the 1320 even with stock gearing. All the answers you are looking for can be found in the zillions of threads about that topic here in the forums...especially the FI sub-forum. You haven't gotten any responses yet primarily due to the broad question you originally posted. This forum is a wealth of information, and although most everyone on here will be more than happy to help you, as with any other forum, it gets tiring answering the same questions over and over again. Check the site out, read some of the FI guys threads, and then ask some more specific questions...you'll get a much better responses.
The s2k and the FD are both really sweet cars...you'll find alot of guys in here that are in the same camp as you

Cool thanks guys.. I understand I asked a general question but I also had some specifics... You say for 9k I can get a turbo kit and be making over 400rwhp but does that include all supporting mods? I know for the FD there is a ton of supporting mods needed to upgrade the turbo. Also could someone post up a link of some reputable s2k performance shops? Thx again guys -Eric
yea, 9k would get you a really good turbo setup plus the reinforced drivetrain needed to handle it.
...figure a good 5-6k for the turbo kit + ems + tuning
I'm not a turbo guy though, so that's about as much as I know about that stuff. I like to keep it all motor, since I autocross

yep, that 9k could include supporting mods, depending on how you went about it.
as for vendors and such, look through the "marketplace" forums for answers. inlinepro is a good place to start. if turbo is what you're after, you can send a PM to ya@inlinepro when you have the car and are looking to buy. he can give you quotes and sell you the kit. first, check the FI forum about required mods, and mention whether you want to launch, why you want the power (track or drag or dd fun etc) and they can give you recommendations on whats worth investing in or considering.
there is a list of shops that people have worked with along with their experiences, so look for that to get the answer to that question.
if you want good answers to your FI questions though, there is a forum section dedicated to FI, and you'll have better luck finding out about supporting mods there.
start by looking through the FI FAQ type thing and search for what you're looking for, and then if you have little/no luck, post that youve searched and didnt find info before you ask and try to be specific, as these questions have been asked hundreds of times. some of the folks get a bit awnry after answering common questions often, so don't get worked up if a few people act as though their wife gave them the cold shoulder...

I understand your problem. First questions I ask is.. is the FD your only car? and how many miles do you put on your car everyday for work and such?
I'm in the same boat. I'm a senior in College just landed a job about 55-60 miles north. I currently have a CRX hf which is my brother's and he will be taking back soon. And my other car is a 97 240 with a LS1 swap. I love it but for a daily driver... It's rough it has Cusco 10/8k coil overs. I was hoping for 30mpg... i drove it pretty easy and only got low 20s.
I'm feeling it's time to move on and cut my losses because i need to find a reliable car that gets pretty good mpg but i want it to be fun and get good mpg. FR car would be amazing too. Right now I'm pretty set on selling the 240 in march and picking up a S2k.
If you live pretty close to work/ school or whatever I'd put a LS1 in that rx7. it's an easy swap. I can't justify a turbo/s2k verse a LS1/FD. by the time you add everything up. The FD/LS1 is going to win everywhere, mpg , power per dollar, etc. besides the fact you engineered it. maybe that might bother you.
But only reason I'm going to S2k over my LS1/240 is pure Honda reliability, hopefully gain 5 or MPG, and get a nice comfy stock ride.
BTW a FD/ LS1 is in my Future. one of my dream cars.
