Well, the suggestion I always make to people is as follows. First, figure out what color you want, or don't want. Second, find the nicest, lowest mileage example of that car that you can afford.
Personally I refuse to get into the "AP1 versus AP2" pissing contest. They're all wonderful cars.

The quality of the car you can afford is much, much more important than the subtle differences from one year to the next.

IMHO if I were to set the way back machine for when I was shopping for one I would have picked the 03
it has the glass rearview window
it is still the F20c with the 9k redline
99% of the mods out there are made for the ap1 platform
it has the upgraded door panels with tweeters
it has the upgraded lights (not ap2 lights but the chrome ring design for ap1)
IMHO it is just the best starting point for a project car S2000.

2004 + . And I've owned both AP1 & AP2. Who needs the extra RPM's? I like getting to my power quicker =). Lets see - I baselined 225 rwhp on a dyno dynamics dyno with a V2 and testpipe (pretty much stock). I highly doubt my previous AP1 would achieve those #'s with those supporting mods. Secondly, I have pulled on 4 AP1's- all with full bolt ons, one mildy tuned. Not bashing here as I have owned an AP1 (They kick @ss as well), but I highly recommend 04 and up.
You get more HP stock, Better wheels, sportier gearing, & more comfortable/forgiving (not as raw while not sacrificing any performance).

i like ap2s better--the TQ is why i got one. however, the 'driver mod' makes a lot more difference, and on the track, an ap1 with a few grand in improvements will outdo a stock ap2 for the same money.
i think asking how much money you want to spend on the base car and how much/what to change on modifications is the best way to start, and then you'll be able to make the best track monster that fits your wallet, and you'll be the happiest overall with your purchase.
