Fundamentally though, when the engine is cold the ECU is raising the engine revs to warm up the engine on max effectiveness. A cold engine would not stay happily at 700 or less rpm, and it would probably stall. If you leave it for a couple of minutes you will notice the engine revs slowing down progressively as it gets hotter.

I take it that you guys are not warming up your cars enough, since you haven't experienced this...I suggest you try warming up the car from cold, 2-3 minutes everytime. For the sake of your engine that is...
Agree with you on all the points above and have observed all of them - higher idle with AC, start idle is much higher (~2k rpm until warm, etc.). However, what I am seeing regularly when the car is well warmed up, with no AC or lights, is a constant cycle between 800 and 900rpm or 900 and 1000. Sounds like this is normal based on most of the comments above. I just wanted to see if anyone was going to say that their rpm was always at a particular number and never moved up and down while idling.

Anyone have a rock-solid idle?

How about this: The car was meant to run with the higher octane possible (near 100 I mean...). This means that 93 octanes are causing extra knocking which the ECU has to compensate for. Have you tried higher octane fuel?

Sounds normal to me

Idle will jump from 800 to 1000 (I think the 1000 is when the engine fan kicks in)

Definitely not a problem though

I don't think I've ever seen anything more than 93 at the pump here in the US. We have some additives that can be purchased at auto parts stores to get the octane to the 100+ range, but that's gonna be a real PITA (getitng to the store, buying a bunch of bottles, adding it at every fillup). Doing all that rasies the "lazy alarm" with me.

Can you get 100 octane at the pump in Europe?

I know of several places to get 100 octane near me. You just have to search for it.

Also, I don't believe our car will benefit from this too dramatically. Might be good for FI to reduce teh threat of detonation, however.

Idle normal. Has anyone actually experienced any detonation, or "pinging" problems with their S. I use 93 octane and have had zero problems.

Here in Europe you can have either 95 or 98 octane (the fuel cap on european s2k's even mentions only to use 98...)

If my car is cool and i first turn it on it idles at about 2000 for about 20 seconds.. then 1,500... then 1000 untill the car is warmed up properly... then it will slowly bounce around between like 800 and 1000
