Whats the big deal?
When my wife and I went to the Chicago auto show in 2007, I saw a blue CR and thought it was the most heinous thing ever.
Didn't see another one in person until a local autocross when a black one showed up.
Bought one the next weekend for $27,500 new and the Obama tax credit made the actual OTD price very nice.
The "ugly but functional" look grows on you. Like Evos and STIs did in the early 2000s. I thought Evos were hideous at first, but now I like them too.
The things I like about the CR (besides the looks, which have grown on me):
1. Same steering ratio as the AP1. Quicker rack than other AP2s.
2. Stiffer springs mean the car can wear wider tires than "other AP2s" without getting into the fender liners, especially in front where the CRs are pretty much the only model that can squeeze 275s up front without destroying the liners in short order.
If you autocross, you'll know that sometimes people are 0.01 seconds apart. And people spend money for every last bit of competitive edge. I never plan to "make money" off my CR, but pretty confident that it will hold its value compared to other AP2s, especially when you consider that many of us paid up to $10k off MSRP for our new ones.

No soft top ruined it for me - we should have gotten the Type S like elsewhere.

I agree. I always thought it would be better for them to come out with the Type-S and invent and release a Type-S Zero (essentially a CR without a/c and radio and maybe some lighter wheels and seats or something).
Yes a softop is very nice to have and I never use my hard top, BUT I love the rear cowl. Would never give that up for a soft top
