Did you check your RPM when it happened, if it was going up and the car did not (or only a little bit) accelerate it was probably the clutch.

I had the same last week, I wanted to squeeze into the traffic as well, I wanted to accelerate a bit faster but not balls out, the car started moving but did not accelerate much, only the Rpm was going to 9000 (this sucks when car are coming at 75 Mph).

I don't know why it happened, It was on a highway exit where you come on a big road going up on the bridge over the highway(I come there every day), I released the clutch as normal, so I don't know what was the problem.

I have to get the clutch opened anyway in a week or so to get the clutch noise thing repaired under waranty, so I will see if it did some harm.

I had a smiliar smell coming from the rear of my car. For some reason the read taillight housing came loose and the bulb melted the casing that it was in. You might want to check the taillight bulb. You can do that through the trunk.
