--->When is the BEST TO SHIFT?<---
Yo, I'm a new PROUD owner of s2. Man everyone on this board that has a s2k is living the life. this car is sweet.
I want to know at what rpm is the best to shift, 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th
NORMAL EVERYDAY DRIVING THAT IS BEST FOR THE CAR
i usually shift at 3000 1st-2nd
at 40mph are you in 3rd or 4th acc normal?
thanks

You'll probably get slightly different answers depending on MY04 vs pre-MY04.
My normal driving is on the spirited side and I shift to first and second @5000, and a bit lower for each higher gear. Even at this RPM, the noise will make people think you're trying to race them.
I'm not too worried about longevity since 5K is not even close to vtec and only a bit more than 1/2 the total RPM range. You wouldn't think twice about driving most cars at around 1/2 their RPM range.

In my 2002 manual Honda recommends the following shift points for smooth acceleration and maximum economy. This is pretty sedate, like how you'd drive if grandma was in the car with you....
1->2 15mph
2->3 25mph
3->4 40mph
4->5 47mph
5->6 52mph
When I'm driving, I'm much more likely to let the engine climb to about 5000 before shifting (esp. 1st and 2nd), and that's when I'm not pushing it.

Around town and when being conservative, I've found that I shift pretty much along what the manual recommends.
However, there are times when I have to let the S2000 breath and live a little, and then redline is tested on 1-3rd and sometimes 4th.
With 100 percent city driving, shifting like the manual recommends, I am getting 22mpg. With 30 percent highway and 70 percent city driving, I got 24.5 mpg.
We'll see how I do on my current tank, as I did some spirited driving on my Sunday drive on some backroads and on the interstate.

I think you need to re-asses your shift points (original poster).
In the morning when it's cold (i.e. below freezing), I'm gentle with everything, and that means shifts under 3500rpm.
After things are warmed up, I typically shift between 4-5000rpms.
That's roughly the equivalent of shifting between 3 and 4000rpms in my WRX (7000 rpm redline). I'd hardly be worried about engine longevity shifting regularly 4000rpms shy of redline.
