When do you know its time to move on?

What's the risk tolerance? Porsche are phenomenal cars but come at a price which financially can bite you hard. I seriously considered an early 987 before buying my S and if money was no object I'd have a P-car in the stable but I can't justify a $20K engine replacement and right now have a family member working through a blown engine caused by inadequate oil on R888 (after many $K's spent in other areas).
Agreed the S is not a daily driver though which a Cayman might be. So many compromises to consider

Porsches are great, and I've long said that a Boxster is the upgrade path from my S, and one day that may happen, but 14 years on and I still love the S and have no desire to trade it for another great car. Other cars (and bikes) have come and gone, but not the S2000, and I daily drive it now.
At one point my S was set up for autocrossing and it was not a fun daily driver, so I reverted more to stock and made the daily drive a more enjoyable experience, and spend more time driving on back country roads vs tracks.
Life is too short to drive boring cars, or cars you're bored with, so if you want something different, go for it. Only advice I have is go with a Boxster, not a Cayman - you're gonna miss open top motoring.

987.1s have a very low chance of IMS failure, as it used the IMS bearing on the 997.

Great feedback here.
Just to be clear. I still love the S2k. It is a special car. I had a great drive last weekend. Just 2 hours on New England back roads with the top down and 70* F.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to have a car like an S2k. Especially my MY2000 with 19k when I bought it. It is pretty much like snatching one off the dealer lot back in 2000.
If I had the ability to have all of my past sports cars I would. My C6 would be next to my 500rwhp Mustang next to the S2k. But its not a reality, so I will take the experience with me. I have not made any decisions, but have started seriously researching Caymans. Yes there is more risk associated with Porsches. But for some reason that seems to make it even more exciting. I will think about it over the winter and keep my options open.
Thanks for all the support and to a great community of enthusiasts that understand what a true driver's car is. To those who love to drive!

I've owned over 100 cars, most of them sports cars or sports sedans. I bought my car new in 2002 after test driving a whole bunch of new and used sports cars that were selling for around $30K at the time. I did a few mods to my S2000 when I first bought it and took it auto crossing. Within two years I changed it back to stock. I just had a new clutch installed. Next week I'm going to a couple of bodyshops for estimates to get some panels resprayed. I'm keeping mine forever.

If at all possible, like others said, keep the S2 and add on.
There’s really nothing else that makes me feel the way I feel in the S2000.
My S2000 is more track oriented now, but I find it comfortable driving if for 8-9 hours down to the dragon.
I’m also on revalved Ohlins. It’s been a year since I installed them but I’m running 13/11 Swift’s with the 14/12 revalve. I have no issues with how they are on the streets. I also have them at almost full stiff.
Some people do fall out of love with the S2. If you fell out of love, move on. There’s nothing wrong with that.

I've had many toys, just got my S2000 this year. I still own my 2007 Shelby that I bought new so I'm a multiple toy owner right now. I sold my 2010 911-S several years ago, there are times I wish I sold the Shelby instead, but overall I have no regrets. I loved my Porsches, but they are fairly expensive to maintain, that and resale value are what lead me to the S2000. I also thought about a 987 Spyder.
So far I love the S2000, the Porsche sounded (with aftermarket exhaust) significantly better, it was MUCH faster, but I can't say it was more fun to drive. I'll own another one day. I say go for it, get one now a few years old, the last of the NA Sixes will hold their value well down the road in my opinion.
