I've had a difficult time finding anywhere around this area to test limits on the car (and my driving). Public roads really aren't a good place- not only because there is other traffic and police, but also because a mistake can leave you in the ditch or worse, wrapped around a tree.

I've been wanting to find an open area of pavement such as a large abandoned parking lot or long stretch of pavement on which to setup cones, drag, and play.

This has proven difficult to find. A friend of mine with an RX-7 and myself would love to find somewhere we could experiment without raising too much attention (police or otherwise). We are far from any professional tracks, and I've not found any close AutoX clubs (Indy is the closest I know- and I'm not ready to start embarassing myself in front of a bunch of enthusiasts yet)

So where do you guys go? I hear a lot about high RPM launches and racing friends, but where do you find enough open abandoned space?

The best location we've identified is an abandoned government amunition plant which has a complete roadway infrastructure and large parking lots on acres and acres of land. However, the land is owned by some people who don't want to be bothered. And I just can't imagine approaching someone with "hey, we'd love to skid around your property in our cars, can we?"

If you are close to Indy, then go to Putnum Park. It is a great racetrack to have fun with.

I'm pretty lucky, I have several roads that are new, and that have good concrete. Not to mention that they mostly have fields on either side (I live basically in BFE). In the twisties concrete (as opposed to asphalt) is Hell on tires, but they is less danger of finding my way to a ditch. I'm over 140 at least 3 times a week, and in 2 and 4 wheel drift at least once a week...hehe. Sorry, I'm a freak.

So did you ever find anything? A friend and I were going to Deal's Gap tomorrow (5/19) but it looks like rain from KY/IN on SE covering TN. With that direction, I started thinking I should go opposite into IN, but I am clueless about good places to drive there.

There are a few good places to drive in the 'Floyds Knobs' area in Indiana. This is an area of hilly country around New Albany Indiana. You head into New Albany and head West and you'll see the knobs. You can take 64 west into Greenville and there are some country roads there which are great for driving! One nice one runs between Greenville and New Albany and its called Corydon something... its about 5 or 6 miles into Greenville (from the exit) on the right. It comes out in New Albany close to 265 (take a right when you hit 160 and you'll come out at 265) and has some very nice twisties.

I haven't really found a good open track for just testing the cars limits...
