If one adds the optional 90# factory hardtop you better weigh your passenger, forget any luggage.

Why the limit since there are much less horse power cars on the road w/o this limit?
This is a tire limitation. thats the max limit for the tires accounting for dynamic effects + a factor of safety

The total weight my tires can hold on my S is 5996 lbs thats 2954 lbs for the front tires and 3042 for the rear tires. No one will ever overload the tires by putting two people(even fat people like me) and normal stuff that you would take on vacation in the trunk + the weight of the car. You would not ever get close to that number. Hell, my wife and I put around 500 lbs on my bike when we go for a weekend ride and Honda says that the weight limit on the bike is 381 lbs.

yeah the hardtop has very little weight, it doesn't take much away from the gross vehicle weight, still lots of capacity for luggage even with a passenger and hardtop.

yeap. the factor of safety is huge. then again if you have bigger tires than stock that weight limit is increased. Also the max dynamic weight the tire will see during hard cornering is much greater than the static weight.

They test the tires harder and under more load, faster than you or I could ever do on the street or track. The tire testing machines they test tires with can put loads on the tires that we just can't replicate out on the road. That is one thing I don't worry about(tires) as long as I have the right air pressure in the tires for the weight thats riding on them. I have made more than my fair share of illegal(short) runs with my truck and my tires held up just fine with twice the weight(40 tons) in the trailer.
